And yes this is a bit of a not so humble brag!

After years of modifying the BT training plans to accommodate what I thought needed to be more run volume, I decided this year to follow the plan as closely as possible.   So I uploaded the Intermidate HIM plan and got to work, it was difficult to not put in 30mpw running, but the bike times were increasing and supposedly the run is all about the bike.  Last week following the plan finally paid off as I had 28 minute PR on the Cedar Point HiM course.  You can see in the image below the difference from a runner trying to be a triathlete (2014) to being a committed triathlete (2015) makes in the race results.

Anyway lesson learned, it is all about the bike (mostly) and it's not necessary to run a crazy amount of miles to be a MOP triathlete.  IF I could just learn to swim faster than a dead log, I would be sitting in really good shape......now to go prepare for my Next!

And thanks to Bt for having a great set of training plans to follow!

Great to hear Matt! Congrats - it's never about what you 'think' is best for you. ;-)

Good Job!

Maybe I should try one of those instead of doing my own thing.

I was thinking about this same thing today. I come from a running background and running has always dominated my training. This year, in preparation for IM Boulder, I decided to focus much more on the bike. I've ridden about 1,000 miles more this year compared to last, and my running dropped significantly (I averaged about 50 miles a month leading up to the IM). The result? I finished the bike at IM Boulder in about 6 hours and followed it up with a 4:25 marathon. Not the fastest to be sure, but it was faster than two of my stand alone marathon times from years past. Congratulations on your improvement and best of luck!

Mike, that was a great plan you put together.  Time constraints kept me from completing it fully as designed, (swim was way off) but I still felt confident going in, especially on the bike.

Good to know the philosophy follows suit to Ironman, as that it is my next step.  Of course I may need to run a little more than 15-20mpw

Matt

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll be updating the plans soon for 2016 so there will be a few more to choose from - and we'll add in some of my favorites like Swim Focus, Run Focus and Bike Focus. Oh, and of course the "No Fluff" plans work great for the off-season too.

Have a good off-season. Let us know if you have questions. Always happy to help!

Without doubt, the single most glaring error I have noticed is the scarce amount of fluids athletes ingest during a race!
