Overcast
Total Time = 1h 20m 49s
Overall Rank = 299/615
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 32/49
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the on site hotel so was able to sleep in until 5 am instead of having to be up at 3:30 if staying on Sanibel.

Bagel with crunchy peanut butter and milk for breakfast then walk to transition.
Event warmup:

Porti-pottie line, walk to swim start, watch the first few waves, get nervous stomach, run back the 1/4 mile to the porti-potties, round 2, run back to swim start, jump in the corral just in time, 3..2..1..GO!
Swim
  • 10m 26s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Roughest swim to date out of any race I've done. Kept getting hit from swimmers being pushed off course by the current/waves. Spent more time on my back trying to catch my breath and fix my goggles than in any race so far. As I exited, I thought I was going to puke, never experienced that before.
What would you do differently?:

Train. This was the first time that I really felt unprepared for the swim. I knew I could finish the distance under normal conditions, but the high surf really made me question my decision to start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Felt very slow coming out of the water. Afterwards, my wife said I looked horrible while trudging towards T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing inside of T1, everything was just as I always set up. The only issue was the mount line, several riders were stopped right at the line and blocking the whole mount line. Had to take a few careful steps around them then mounted just past the line.
Bike
  • 29m 49s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Training wasn't were it should be, but felt good on the bike. Still have the issue of being in one of the fast bike groups and starting last on the swim. Passed well over 100 riders in less than 10 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Get older so I can start sooner.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Decided to wear socks for this race since I haven't been running and my feet aren't ready for going sockless. Remembered to roll my socks, forgot to untie my shoes. I also sat down to get shoes on, something I don't normally do. Felt like that sowed me down a lot.
What would you do differently?:

Untie my shoes when setting up and DO NOT SIT DOWN!!!
Run
  • 36m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

I suck at running!
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Not suck.
Beat this plantar fasciitis.
Lose weight (like an entire triathlete worth of weight)
Post race
Warm down:

Cold drinks, water, Coke, Gatorade, and beer, in that order. Find some shade, ice towel, cold shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury, work, family, lazy, etc., etc., etc.

Event comments:

5th time at this race, and every year it gets better. Ken, Angie, and Kate are some of the hardest working and understanding Race Directors around. I'm already looking forward to my email invitation to next year's race.
