Eagle, Wisconsin
United States
Overcast
Total Time = 4h 36m 43s
Overall Rank = 11/240
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/30
Pre-race routine:

ate a little at 3 AM (Clif Bar 1/3), then power bar cookie and stinger waffle with Gatorade at 5:30 AM.
Got lost going to the race with Scott, made it there about 10-15 min before the start. Whew! That took the race nerves completely away, just glad to be there.
Event warmup:

stood by a fire pit by the starting line to stay warm...it was in the 40's and breezy (17 mph)
Run
  • 4h 36m 43s
  • 31.4 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

consistent splits...ran most of the hills until the last 10 miles, walked a couple of the really rocky, long Kettle sections. focused heavily on the terrain and watching for the blue ribbons. only got passed once in the last 25 miles (Around 20) and I passed 8-9 in the last 10 miles. Felt good, had I gone quicker thru the first 2 aid stations I might have been closer to beating the guy from Madison.
What would you do differently?:

drink more, have a better plan for the aid stations. Pretty much stuck with Cliff Gels, water, electrolytes, and Clif energy drink on the course. Wore my fuel belt, which never bothered me the entire race...I was worried about that.
Post race
Warm down:

warm clothes, watched or Scott to finish, called Sara, ate 2 bags of chips, cliff bar, pulled pork sandwich and Chili...Scott and I split peanut M&Ms on the way home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

7-10 day break in running due to ankle sprain.
left knee tendonitis
no realy nutrition or diet plan...my weight was 180 and could have been 5 lbs lighter wtih a little dedication.

Event comments:

Glad I did it...really appreciate a great course like that, we don't have anything that really compares in Green Bay...I think I'll be back again next year, if Scott and Eric join me.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.
