While swimming today I thought to myself "I wonder what a triathlete (IM and 70.3) considers average training for long course races?" I have my set amounts for each distance so I thought I would pose the question- In weeks, hours of training, whatever you want what is your min. and max. for training?

Ok. I'll throw it out there. Doing my first 140.6 next month, so at my peak weeks. Put in 14.5 hours last week...bike 8.0, run 4.0, swim 2.5. Was probably averaging 8-10 for my 70.3 races. Been training specifically for this race for about 16 weeks but really started base work over winter.

I don't do full IM but for 70.3, I'm usually averaging 12-15 hours per week. That includes about 3 hours of swimming, maybe 5 of running, 5-5 1/2 of biking, the rest (about 2) strength. I have seen people do less, and more. I have a strong swim and run background, and could probably finish it with less, but trying to be competitive in my AG.I don't do full IM, mainly because I have neither the time, nor the place, nor the desire to do 6+ hour rides, and the idea of a 3-hour run in this heat makes me ill.

I'm with StevenC. My first IM is next month and I ramped up major base building in January and had a big bike race in June that got me squared away on the bike so I could focus on running closer to peak weeks going into taper. I've been training each week 10-18hrs a week depending on work and life commitments. I've done 4 HIM and I don't think I did more than 7-10 hrs a week. Now that I've tried to make this IM not a religious experience by upping my training volume I would be more inclined to train like this (10-18hrs/week) for a HIM going forward instead of the lesser volume.

I did 3 full Ironman races this year.

I swam 3 times per week, ran 4 times per week and cycled 4 times per week. I took no days off (Monday swims were "active recovery" days). Saturday was long bike day with a short run afterwards and Sunday was a medium length bike with a medium length run. Thursday were my long run days (topped out at 18 miles). I never went much more than 15 hours in total each week.

I spent the first 4 months of the year training for the Fargo Marathon (May 9th). I was trying to Boston qualify so I was putting in huge running time/miles. I was still swimming and biking, but it was a run focused 4 month block. I needed 3:45 to BQ, I got 3:10. It was my first stand alone marathon.

I just checked my logs to see what I did this year leading up to my first IM at the beginning of August. In January I was averaging about 6 hours/ week of training. In March it was closer to 8 hours. June was the biggest month in terms of training and I averaged about 12 hours a week. Looks like my longest week during all training was about 17 hours. I put a lot more work into the bike this year and less into the run. For me that was a good strategy for IM.
