If you DNF a race, does that count as a race?  At my one and only race, which I did not complete, it was considered my "first race".

Since I never actually completed a race, what is my next event considered?

In my book no.  I've had 2 run races where I did not finish due to an existing calf injury at the time.  They don't exist in my race log!

I buy this^

I promise.....you'll receive no shaming from me for DNF'ing any race you toe'd the line for. You beat everyone who didn't toe that line.

Who cares, really? Just chalk it up as experience.

Depends what you mean by "race." I certainly think it might be especially if the dnf taught you something about racing. Ten years I have one DNF (and it was a doozy, first IM ) and its in my race log because it was instructive. IM may be different as IMO the hardest part is getting to the start.

In my mind my dnf was a race. In the end it all depends what you think

You having a DNF does not change the fact that you paid for the race and toed the line.  It's still a race.  A race you did not finish; however, you have more knowledge going into the next race.  Of course I'm assuming you learned something.  Head up and sign up for another one!

The bike ride really strained my lower back to the point I could barely walk after T2.  Most definitely a learning, and humbling, experience.  I'm going to sign up for another one hopefully soon.

I guess you can only have one "first race."  I wish I could erase mine, though!

In my book a DNF is indeed a race.  A DNS, no.

Sucks that it was your first, but you trained for it, you got to the start line and during the race injury caused you to stop.  Think of it this way, if Rinny was asked if she raced Kona this year do you think she'd say no?

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
