Comments:

The swim was a time trial format by age group. They started one person every 3 seconds. 45-49 men was the last age group in the water. I started at the back of the group so I could chase all day which is great motivation for me. There was a lot of traffic so I took it a little easy on the swim so I could save energy for the bike and run. There were already several hundred swimmers in the water when my age group started so starting at the front of the age group would not have improved traffic much.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

T2 included a 200 yard run from swim exit to the transition area.
Bike
  • 45m 23s
  • 25 kms
  • 33.05 km/hr
Comments:

There was a lot of traffic but it made for a fun race with a lot of passing. The traffic made for a fast time for me because of the benefit of the draft. No I did not ride in the draft, but you still get the benefit of the draft when constantly making passes.
Transition 2
  • 59m 25s
Run
  • 25m 17s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 04s  min/km
Comments:

My running is starting to improve but is still my weakest area. Need to work on this.

Event comments:

This is a very well run race with a lot of racers that made it fun. The participants ranged from first times to very good seasoned racers. There was something for everyone and it was overall a great race that was well organized on a great course.

Course: The bike course leaves transition, turns right to cross the dam, makes a left up a hill to leave the park then turns right down a hill for about 3 miles to a turn around with a bump over some railroad tracks then 6 miles to another turn around and then back to the park and transition area. One hill at the entrance to the part meant three short climbs. I was surprised how many people struggled on that hill. I made a lot of passes each time. I don't know the details of the length and slope of the hill but I don't think it was near as bad as the hill I climb every ride to get back home. I guess that is one nice thing about a big climb right before home - it gets you ready for them on race day.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
