Subject: Help me pick a bike? Please?
So I posted on here for the first time a few days ago when I was thinking about getting a tri bike as my first bike. After hitting all of the LBS's in the area, I determined that I wanted a road bike, carbon forks, 105 or Ultegra group, and 55 to 57cm frame. I really enjoyed the Cannondale Synapse and thought that was the one. Then I tried the CAAD10 and I liked it even more. Technically, they put me on a SuperSix and it was wonderful. The LBS has a new 2014 CAAD10 with some minor damage and mostly 105 components. They came down a bit and I stood firm at $1050. Bicycle Blue Book puts the price range in like new condition (with the damage I would consider it this) at $1041 to $1071 and I didn't even know this at the time. Looks like I was right on with my pricing if you ignore the overhead they have to pay. Also, they have been housing this bike for 2 years, it hasn't moved, and I was holding a grand. I was a little put off by them and I do not want to pay $1500 for a CAAD10 with 105, I want a great deal, not a good deal. Before I get to my question, I used to be an aircraft mechanic, I have a degree in electrical engineering, and I cannot see myself using the LBS for much more than an in-depth fit before a tri or truing the wheels. I plan on doing everything else. So, I have narrowed it down to 4 bikes and I cannot choose. I really like the look of the Kestrel's and I was hoping you guys could look them over and tell me what the best deal/fit/performance package would be out of these 4:

Evoke 3 (No year listed) - http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/kestrel/road-bikes/evoke3-carbo... - $1200
*Cheapest, Full Shimano 105 5800, FSA MegaExo BB CFM3 BB30-BSA (should I be worried about this?)

2015 - http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/kestrel/road-bikes/talon-road-b... - $1400
*Shimano 105 (not full), Oval Concepts BB, most race oriented?

2013 - http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/kestrel/kestrel-legend-road_bik... - $1500
*My favorite color (most important right?), Full Ultegra except FSA Gossamer crankset

Evoke 2 (No year listed) - http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/kestrel/road-bikes/evoke2-carbo... - $1500
*Full Ultegra 6800, FSA MegaExo BB CFM3 BB30-BSA (should I be worried about this?)

This is so difficult and I am torn. I really like the look of the Legend and Talon the most but I'm not ruling out the Evoke's either. I've heard that pictures do not do them justice. I could really use any and all input. Thank you all so much, you've been a ton of help already. Sorry to make this so long, I hate spending this much without doing the research first.

bikesdirect and great deal don't go together. You should be able to find a CAAD10 for under the $1k with some online snooping. (Try online swap meet on FB or the classifieds here/st/craigslist.) Since you've already sat on a CAAD and like it why buy a "meh" frame instead?

YMMV

I couldn't find a 56CM CAAD10 within 200 miles of me on CL. What is st? Ebay didn't have anything either... I would have thought a 2014 with top tube damage would go for $1k at the LBS but they said "No."

Sorry, I'm not going to help you screw over your LBS, even if you don't plan on going back.

I don't see how it is screwing over an LBS. They have a *damaged* bike they haven't sold in two years, their outcome is no different. My offer was right in the middle of the acceptable price on Bike blue book. I suppose it is fair for them to screw me, after all, they are an LBS?

$1500 is a ridiculous asking price for a "not brand new with warranty" 2014 CAAD10 105 (pretty sure it's 10 speed).  I wouldn't even pay that for a brand new 2016 CAAD12 105 as it retails for $1680.  Bike shops have 10-20% sales off of new inventory all the time.  There really is no need to pay MSRP unless the bikes are in such high demand they can't be kept in stock.

I think roughly $1000 for a 2014 CAAD10 105 is a more than generous offer to the LBS.  If they think they can get more for the bike, it would have sold a long time ago.  Just because they helped you try out a few bikes it doesn't mean you have to buy from them.

I think it's bad form to purposely use an LBS to demo bikes with full intent to purchase used or online, but I don't see that as the issue here.  OP is offering fair market value...it's up to the LBS to accept it.

Personally, if the LBS thinks that $1500 for that bike is a good price I'd walk out and never step foot in their store again.  Either they have no clue what the bike is really worth, or they think it's okay to try and rip you off.  Neither of which are qualities I want from my LBS.

Thank you guys for backing me up, and it was a 10 speed with Teknic brakes (not sure if that's exactly right). The LBS that I went to was close to my house and in the "upper" part of town. I found another 'Dale dealer about 20 miles away and they have a 2015 CAAD10 105 on sale for $1280 plus 20% off any bike accessories the day of my purchase. Very reasonable in my opinion. It has a 3-4 day lead time because they have to order it. Roughly $200 more for a non-blemished one year newer perfect condition CAAD10, can't go wrong there. If anyone has any opinions regarding the Talon or Legend that I posted above, I would love to hear them. Otherwise, looks like I may be a Cannondale owner in about a week. Thanks again.

P.S. - Don't worry, I won't let one keyboard warrior ruin my opinion of the whole board.

Did you look on eBay? Or check performance bike? I bought my last 2 off eBay and one off slow twitch. I saved a bundle on all of them. Performance and other online retailers like Nytro are starting to have some good deals online.

The CAAD 10 is a nice bike, since you have been on it and clearly liked it more than some other bikes I would ignore the Talon and legend unless you ride them and like them equally as much. Even if the CAAD 10 is a couple bucks more, your body will thank you for spending the extra money every time you get on it.
