So updated short and long term goals on dashboard. Short ones pretty easy - r/b/w 2/week; core/strength work 3x week, lose 11 lbs by Dec. 31. I see how good it feels to run after losing 50 lbs and another 11 will leave me slim and trim.

Long term goals were harder. I've done an oly so now it's about not being one of the last to finish. Sometimes it seems like the first two in my age group are fast and the third is the next person over the line. Is it crazy to shoot for that third place finish? There's usually under 20 in the W55-59 group.

I've thought of a HIM but think maybe I should become a MOP at least before I up the distance.

What are your goals this year?

My goals for 2016 training and improvement:
Swim: proper form and to be able to swim at least the distance of Oly in open water.
Bike: I would love to go up to 20 mph (I am currently at 17/18)
Run: would love to go down to 8 min/mile with comfort and smile (currently 8:40 with tiny smile..) and half marathon distance (which could be any pace)
Races for 2016:
Improve Sprint races
Complete Oly (with the best results I am capable to have)

Don't make the mistake of having a finish place as your goal......you have no control over who shows up at your race.  Concentrate on personal improvement.

LB is right, it is important to make goals that you can control. You can control how much work you put in to improve, while you can't control who shows up on race day. As for HIM vs Oly, why do you want to do HIM? Do you like spending a lot of time out there training? Are you working up to an IM? Knowing why you want to do something is helpful when choosing goals.
My goals for 2016 are to complete a sprint tri, which will be my first race since 2010. I want to do either a second sprint or an oly depending on my summer travel schedule.

2016 goals:

comfortably hang with Cat 1&2 riders instead of dangling off the back for 50 miles before getting dropped in the last 10.

Run a 1/2 marathon at 8 minute pace.

I have a pinched nerve in my neck at C6 which is causing a burning pain in the upper shoulder and down the triceps of my right arm. I worry about training and doing long-term nerve damage.

Making goals achievable is an important part of reaching our end goal. Also, having a bar that is set high is important, so we are always striving for something better.

Approximately how long do you think can I reasonably expect to keep making these improvements in speed and performance? I know it has to drop off sometime, I'd just like to have an idea of when.
