read a thread a few months back about a person DNF'ng and being crushed by it. I thought to myself, it happens, move on. Well today, I DNF'd because of a calf pull in the Philadelphia HM. I can't tell you how depressing and demoralizing this is. Weeks of training and build up the, poof....all gone with one wrong step. I made it through 7.5 miles right on the pace it wanted. felt great, even dealing with the start of a cold. Need some downtime to get this one out of my head, but totally depressed by it.

Sorry about your race, it sucks.

Injuries are a HUGE part of running.  Every single person who runs on a regular basis will be injured from it.  EVERY ONE.  The only way to not be injured by running is to not run.  If you want to be a runner then you have to accept that simple fact.

Heal up and move on.

Sorry to hear about your race dude. I can understand why you're feeling the way you're feeling, but don't let it sink you too low. Figure out what needs to be done with your calf, and try again.

Thanks everyone. Depressed was the wrong word. Disappointed was the right word. It's all good, spent the evening looking for a spring HM that I was not planning to run this year. Gotta get back on the horse.

Treat recovery like a race in itself.  Depending on the grade of your injury you have x number of weeks to recover.

Read as much as you can and treat rehab positively.  Time to perhaps pay attention to some of the things it’s easy for us all to neglect; nutrition, core work, mobility and flexibility.  What might have caused your injury?  Does your technique need attention?  Were there any warning signs you could have heeded?  Do some reading, learn about your body and take some time to rest.

Calf’s are notorious for re-injury so you have to treat this type of setback with huge respect.

The next finish line you reach will be all the sweeter for getting over this.

Personally, when I injured my calf I found it was likely to be a result of poor stability, lazy glute’s and a weak core so I really went to town on those.

All in good time of course – RICE comes first.

At least you didn't crash and break your leg during an Ironman. I can tell you from experience, that REALLY sucks.
Could be worse!!
