Comments:

This was my first ultra and first trail run so I didn't know quite what to expect. Started off nice and slow and was relieved to see that most everyone around me was doing the same. Walked up the steep hills but otherwise ran the rest. The trails were very well marked and wide so I never felt crowded other than maybe the first mile. There were four manned aid stations with hot soup, sandwiches, cookies, candy, pop and Gatorade. All of the volunteers were great and tripping over themselves to help. It was nice!

Felt pretty good through out the day until about mile 28, from then on I was getting tired and ready to be done. I still was able to keep from walking other than uphill which was my goal for the day.

Didn't really have the feeling that I was in a race, more like in a large group run. I liked that because there was absolutely no pressure to hurry through the aid stations or not to take bathroom breaks for the sake of time.

What would you do differently?:

Not much, my approach to the day was pretty sound.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some homemade soup in the heated tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wasn't trying to go fast, just wanted to get to the end.

Event comments:

For my first ultra, this couldn't have been better, great weather, a great course and great support. The course covers a huge state park and it's beautiful scenery. It was challenging but not too rough for a first timer. I would recommend it for anyone, experienced or not.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
