Pre-race routine:

Went to the race with Rachel. Woke up around 4:30 which is my usual time and ate sausage breakfast sandwich and a banana. Drank an ensure and really tried to limit any additional liquid intake so I wouldn't need to use the bathroom during the race.
Event warmup:

Not a lot of warm-up because of the weather. We tried staying mostly sheltered from the rain and cold. About 20 minutes before the race was supposed to start we both warmed up. I ran maybe 1/4 - 1/2 mile medium jogging. Stretching too

Comments:

Because I was not supposed to run this race, and our race was supposed to be at the end of October and got cancelled my body should have been more prepared for this race, but my mind was having a lot of difficulty training for the previous 2-3 weeks. I was pretty much sick of running. I'm sure that showed through to the race a little. I also think that being stuck in corral B hurt me. I guess I provided a slow estimated finish time, because the fastest pace group in corral B was like 9:30/mile. I would have wanted to be in the 7:30/mile. I had to run around sooo many slow people at the start that I wasn't able to settle in to a comfortable pace from the beginning. After the race I was initially thinking I wasn't mentally strong, but looking back on it, I realized I was doing pretty well. I knew I was going a tad slower than I had wanted to be going, but I was constantly pushing myself.
What would you do differently?:

Lie if I need to so that I'm seeded properly. I have this same issue in pool tri's. So many people lie about their times. The slow, fat people hurt the others that have to start behind them.
I also need to do more speed training. My cardio was just fine and my legs were without cramps the whole race (almost had some quad issues around mile 11-13).
Post race
Warm down:

Stayed under my heat sheet and ate the post race food. Walked (hobbled kind of) to the car to change and then waited approx. 1 hour until Rachel finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can't blame the slower people for all of my performance. I should have trained more doing speed work at the track or similar.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
