Started out on a nice 4 hour ride today with some good hills.....about an hour in I dropped a chain, couldn't get the right foot out in time and went down. I'm fine, just bruised. I got the chain back on but my seat was torqued sideways....hmmmm, seems I remember this from last year. Well, carbon screams torque wrench but an allen wrench would do...which I didn't have either so I called hubby and he came to get me. Fortunately there was a hill and I coasted down to a gas station and got a coffee. I had planned to come home and jump on Vader and keep going but time was ticking and we have "ozone warnings" out today for heat in the 90's. Body parts were a little sore so I opted for a 5.5 mile run instead with some slight pick-ups. I'll ride tomorrow when the temps will be a little friendlier and kids are in camp.

Alan, just for you I stopped for a scenic picture complete with a red barn.
The other is the silver lining.....coffee..

Going to have to figure that out.

Hi Everyone! I took yesterday off after my race on Sunday. I would have liked to get in a swim, but I had a migraine/sinus headache that made me feel like my head was going to split open at any second. Actually, it made me hope my head would split open. Couldn't have hurt any more!! Anyway, back at it today with masters swimming this morning and a planned run this afternoon. I'm already up to 232 workouts for the year. At this pace, I'm going to blow past both my goal (400) and last year's mark (413).

Brick in the books for today. Now I'm off to the city to gorge myself on REI and Trader Joe's shopping before heading to my parents' house to see some visiting aunts I haven't seen in probably 25 years.

Masters this morning. Hot and very humid in the pool today. Coach had us finish the set today with 450yds of kicking--no fins. I'm pretty clear now that I'm not getting a lot of propulsion from my kick. Bike ride with hill repeats this afternoon, if the storm holds off long enough for me to get it in.

Another good morning at Masters swim class. MS was 16x100m, hold pace. It got harder as the set went on, which is typical, but even harder because we were all trying not to laugh at the college team. They were doing some weird team building exercise that involved having one person lay/sit/hold on to a Swiss ball and then the others had to push/pull/swim that person to the other end of the pool without them falling off. It was fun to watch, and the kids looked like they were having fun too.

Tomorrow is the Tour de Corn 65mi bike ride. Supposed to be flat. I'll be using it as a test run for my HIM ride in 5 weeks (eep! 5 weeks!!). Two weeks ago I did a 60 mile ride south of here as a test ride, but that one was so hilly it didn't feel like an adequate test. It has 1650' of climb. My race has 650'. This ride has 400', so this will be slightly easier, but much closer than the last one. I'd love to ride the course for my HIM, but it is 3 hours away and I just don't think there is time to get it done. Absolutely no where to stop and get water, so I'd have to have someone supporting me. I did drive it when I was up that way for my race last weekend.

You will be great - you sound well prepared with some good rides under your belt. It sounds like you've been riding courses both harder and similar to what you will be riding in your HIM so you should feel confident.

Hi guys.

I'm an hour away from driving to my HIM I signed up for this past Tuesday (race is tomorrow). I am officially freaking out a bit right now - just nerves. I finally got 2 ows in this past week in my new wetsuit and I also wore it in the pool in between the two ows. It is sooo much tighter than my previous suit, it's really taking some getting used to. When I wore it in the pool (which I normally wouldn't do - don't worry, I rinsed the suit out and soaked it in plain water after), I almost had a panic attack, it was very strange. The pool was just enough warmer than the pond that I was overheating and my heart would start racing after only 100 yards. I had to make a concerted effort to swim very slow. The goal of the swims was to get used to the suit and also to start the stretching out process that happens with a new suit. I am so happy I went for the ows yesterday - i felt so much better. I was seriously considering not doing the race after my pool experience. Now I really understand why USAT doesn't permit wetsuits at all above certain temperatures.
I did 10 x 100 in the wetsuit in the pool then took it off to see how I felt after - so weird... It was refreshingly cold but I felt like I was swimming in jello after having the buoyancy of the wetsuit.

Question... so I'm bringing two helmets to the race, my regular cycling helmet and my aero helmet. I haven't ridden 56 miles in my aero helmet yet (just short jaunts to get a feel for it) but I figure this is a training race and a good opportunity to see how it goes over a longer distance. The other thing I was thinking though, is that it will be about 86 degrees tomorrow and the aero helmet has zero vents in it..... Do I wear the regular helmet for ventilation or the aero helmet to get used to it, because hey, it could very well be 90 degrees at IMMT.... Had I thought about doing this race sooner, I would have practiced with it more prior.

You will be perfectly fine! For some reason (adrenaline) we always do much better at races than training. I have been following your tremendously consistent training plan and you have some pretty good bike rides with you even tougher than the race one, so you should enjoy it, no doubt!

Jenn, one of the reasons I have not yet bought an aero helmet is exactly for that reason, here in Spain is pretty hot and I have to balance between getting fried inside and aero helmet or the few seconds that I will steal to the clock. Of course, I would look much better with an aero but still thinking about it (in fact, trying to decide between Giro attack and Catlike cloud, both with some vents). If I were you I would take both to the place, and decide the same morning... (not very helpful).
Have a great race, enjoy it!!

Very hilly and about 85 degrees - sun was just beating down. I'm in my motel room on the bed trying to will myself to take a shower. Not feeling great. Trying to hydrate, ready to fall asleep.
Glad I did it, learned a few things.

Hahaha, I couldn't stomach it until evening and I was by myself at this race so I'm waiting until this evening...or about now and I will have a Heady Topper.
Although, being that it's 90 degrees, a vodka tonic is sounding quite refreshing.

I am working on the race report - they don't have the official results posted yet.

EDIT: this is the account I was looking for

Hi everyone..

So there may be a few of you who remember me from last year around this time..I went kind of quiet around BT towards the end of the season, and then fell off of training during the off season. I went through some huge changes at the end of last year, decided to leave my career in the casino industry and serve my country in the US Army, left after the 1st of the year, went through basic training and then Infantry school. Prayers were answered and I found myself stationed in probably the best place I could imagine...beautiful Colorado Springs. I get paid to live and train at high altitude!

I'm saving my pennies as we speak to try and get back on a bike so I can start training again, I'm already back in the pool a few days a week, and I'm running around 20-25 miles a week with my squad. My run, which used to be by far my weakest leg has become probably my strongest now, was running near 5:30 min/mile by the end of infantry school. Was supposed to run a half marathon this coming weekend for the 4th, but it got cancelled.

Becoming an Infantryman has taken what I thought was a hunger to push myself to my limits and refined it to something I could never imagine, I can't wait to see how that is going to translate to the racing world.

It's probably going to be a while before I can save enough for a bike on the limited budget I have, so I will probably continue to run races and work at getting faster.

Hope everyone around BDAS has been doing well!
