I had a pretty good weekend. Saturday I rode the Tour de Corn bike ride in SE Missouri. It was HOT, but the course was FLAT and there were lots of rest stops. I saw a lot of corn. I used it as a test run for my HIM, and managed to do 56 in 3:22, which is pretty good for me. My early splits, which may have had a tail wind, but didn't feel like it, were 18+mph. Later, I was chugging along into a headwind at 14.5mph. That wasn't fun, but at one of the aid stations a guy who looked like a real cyclist (nice bike, cool helmet, calves and thighs that looked like tree trunks) came up to me and said he had been trying to catch me since the previous rest stop (~14-15miles), but just couldn't close the last 0.25mi. That made me feel pretty good!!

Yesterday I tried to do my long run, but it turned out to be a big fat bust. I managed 7.22mi (of planned 9ish) before I called it a day. I bombed both my hydration and nutrition. Plus, I think I was a little burned from the day before.

Today, morning master's swim. Should do an hour run this afternoon, but I'm going to bump that one until tomorrow morning to give myself a little rest between runs.

Great to have you back!

Congratulations on your new career change!

Originally posted by GeauxHard EDIT: this is the account I was looking for Hi everyone.. So there may be a few of you who remember me from last year around this time..I went kind of quiet around BT towards the end of the season, and then fell off of training during the off season. I went through some huge changes at the end of last year, decided to leave my career in the casino industry and serve my country in the US Army, left after the 1st of the year, went through basic training and then Infantry school. Prayers were answered and I found myself stationed in probably the best place I could imagine...beautiful Colorado Springs. I get paid to live and train at high altitude! I'm saving my pennies as we speak to try and get back on a bike so I can start training again, I'm already back in the pool a few days a week, and I'm running around 20-25 miles a week with my squad. My run, which used to be by far my weakest leg has become probably my strongest now, was running near 5:30 min/mile by the end of infantry school. Was supposed to run a half marathon this coming weekend for the 4th, but it got cancelled. Becoming an Infantryman has taken what I thought was a hunger to push myself to my limits and refined it to something I could never imagine, I can't wait to see how that is going to translate to the racing world. It's probably going to be a while before I can save enough for a bike on the limited budget I have, so I will probably continue to run races and work at getting faster. Hope everyone around BDAS has been doing well!

Gretchen - congrats on the great ride on Sat! Having lived in Indiana, I can only imagine how exciting the Tour de Corn must be. You were flying - I would love to average 18+!!!

Sounds like you were bushed from your ride so I can totally understand why you called it a day in regards to your run on Sun.. Next time, try really hard to finish that run even when your tired (unless you're worried about getting injured). Pushing through is what will give you the supreme confidence you need to have the best possible HIM. One thing I've learned - HIM and IM are 60% mental and the only way your get mentally strong is by keeping on keeping on.... Walk if you have to - just finish because your brain needs these victories to prove to itself that it can handle whatever you throw at it on race day.

Not to sound like a nag - but you might want to give aqua jogging a try this afternoon after your swim class - It's a great way to get in a quick run without worry of injury and will help you recover (so says the guy with an ice pack on his knee and his foot soaking in an ice bath).

When is your HIM?

Two bits of news to report:

1) I got a job teaching 7th and 8th grade humanities at a local public school. The relief is more than I can possibly describe. Now I can focus on my upcoming race season.

2) I just got back from my longest ride since my last HIM in August. Holy cow was I tired. Lugging around 240 is not fun so I'm really going to try to be good while I'm on vacation. I was pretty proud of my self last night. Only had two beers. I need to make it happen because my achillies hurts and now my right knee is starting to chime in - even on the bike. It's time to get biblical!

Hope everyone is well and sorry again for being so absent this year.

Glad I did it, learned a few things.

Jenn - Kudos on a great race! I've never cracked 7 hours so be proud of crushing me!

Are you still doing IMMT?

PS - As for the S and V potato chips - the person I was running IMMT with had some and I had to resist gobbling them up. They were so fricking good. Now you know what you must add to your T2 bag.

Nice run this morning with a little Z4 work in 75F temps. It was glorious!! Having breakfast now, then going to use my ride today to take care of a couple of errands.

Still planning on IMMT at this point, we shall see. I'd love to hear about your experience there (other than your race report), I'm a little freaked out about how far behind I am in training and also with having a couple of things happen last week to shake my confidence a bit - fall on the bike and bad swim on Wednesday.

A good start to the week.   Monday was about 1500 in the pool followed by a good strength and core session, today was 30 min trainer/4 mile run this morning and a lunch 1800 yard swim.  Stole one of Sara McClarty's workouts from her blog for today.

I'm starting to feel some real gains in the pool - I'm consistently in the low-mid 40s on my 50y intervals and for 200s even at an easy pace I'm holding 1:45ish.

I think I need to do a 10 x 100 on 1:50 and see how good I feel then!

race link is above - not sure if it works until I post this - otherwise, just go to my profile and it's there somewhere if you want to read it.

A couple of things about the race I have been keeping in mind - I crashed my bike last Monday and had some sore spots left and had a poor swim on Wednesday so going into the race I was mentally down a bit - not as confident as I could have been. My longest run to that point was only 10.5 or so, though I had done 3 of those and was running upwards of about 6 miles (give or take) two other times during the week and a shorter run as part of a brick so I felt pretty strong for that.
When I initially finished the race I wasn't happy with my performance due mainly to the swim and bike but as I've had time to really sit and think about it, a lot of really good things came out of it:

- I really learned that SPRAY ON SUNSCREEN is KEY!! I FRIED on the backs of my shoulders, just absolutely fried. Spray-on sunscreen in T2 in particular is key. (if T1 and T2 are co-located, bonus!). It was about 89 degrees and the sun was just a-bakin' everything.
- still need to focus heavily on food and drink on the bike. I suck at it, plain and simple. I need to work on bike strength. It's a fairly hilly course but I still wanted to be at least 19+ mph average on that course.
- by the same token, don't burn your matches on the bike....you still have to run a 1/2 marathon and I saw a lot of people exploding on the run. (so I did a good job there; guys that had great swims and bikes had me passing them on the run!)
- ice is your friend, shove it into every orifice you have on a hot day. Jog bras are a blessing for that!! (sorry, guys)
- I found it ironic that while I couldn't run last year with my knee, it has become stronger for me this year (not really in terms of speed, but in terms of feeling stronger) - so that's good. A guy came up to me after the race while I was chatting with my mom-in-law (my sole support person there) and commented on my strong pace at the end and had seen me walk through a couple of aid stations and on steep sections of a hill and he said "I thought to myself, that girl is onto to something in this heat." So, it worked.
-finally, my plan seems to be doing okay. I didn't feel sore or in pain at the end of the race at all. Other than the heat taking it's toll, I could have gone for a short jog the next day!! Sure I could feel a little fatigue in my legs but nothing was sore! I was surprised and happy with that. At first I thought, maybe I didn't go hard enough, then I thought, I went just right for that heat and my training has been decent. So, a good thing.

Last but not least...I did end up at the doctor's yesterday. I inhaled a wave about 2/3 of the way through the swim and my lungs were just searing. I had to pull up short and hack up a lung for a while (thus my slowest swim time to date). The searing continued the rest of the race and on into the subsequent days. I was wary of SIPE during the race but fortunately no symptoms showed up. Tupper Lake has a lot of geese so I was thinking potential bacterial infection or the obvious - water in the lungs causing pneumonia. They did have me pop an x-ray which to this point shows no fluid in the lungs - yea! They also recommended rest as they believe I have really irritated my lungs - it hurts to do any deep breathing. Sooo...I hit the gym today for weights instead. Tried the elliptical just for 5 minutes to warm up (treadmills were all taken) and just the slightly heavier breathing hurt (how the heck did I get through the race!?)...so maybe they're right and tomorrow I'll go get a massage instead...
Okay, that's all - sorry so long!

Behind is a relative term... You might think that you are behind in your training but it might be a more accurate description to say you are not where you want to be in your training. Like I was saying to Gretchen - going long - especially the IM is mostly mental. So, the real question is - do you have confidence to conquer the course. Based upon your HIM time - I have no doubt that you could be fist bumping Mike Reilly within the 17 hour time limit.

The key to Tremblant is the bike and being able to handle the hills. The run is a piece of cake since the vast majority of it is on a trail trail. So, the question is - How are your hill workouts coming? What is the farthest you've gone on the bike?

The other thing about Tremblant is that the course is full of spectators who will be there to cheer you on even when you are tired. Tremblant is tough - but there are a lot of things about it that will help you finish. Let's talk more but know this - you can do this!

Jenn: Great job on the race! You earned that beer

Dave: Congratulations on the job!

I've just been keeping up on my running. Doing a little bit of bike commuting and swimming at least once a week is keeping me in motion but I'm not expecting to break any records this year when it comes to triathlons. I only have two on my calendar (sprint in July and Oly in November) so this year is more of a run focus. I did make it out on the water a few times on my SUP as paddle escort for the local open water swimming group. When given the choice between swimming and paddling, my strained shoulder prefers to be paddling. Conditions have been great so the time on the water is well spent and the swimmers appreciate having me for support.

Thank you!

So the reality of me getting onto a bike before this season is up and finding a race is pretty slim to none, however I have been looking around at some running events and I'm thinking that I may be able to get enough training in to do a Marathon on 9/24, and then the Denver Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon on 10/16, a few days before I leave for a month long training in California.

Is it unreasonable for me to try and ramp up mileage that fast?

It looks like you've got 3 months to train and you're already at 20-25 miles/week. Pull up a 12 week training plan and see how it starts out compared to what you're already doing- I bet not too far off! If you were preparing for a HM for this upcoming weekend, then I should think you'd be fine, it sounds like you've got a strong base to build from.

Yeah I'm pretty confident I could run a half right now and be alright, just didn't know how big a step it is from a half to a full. For Memorial Day I did a 30k Ruck march with a 45lb rucksack. It was an absolutely brutal race, but I actually finished fairly well. Was on track to break the 4 hour mark, fought cramps starting at about mile 10, ran completely out of water 4 miles from the finish line. It was a longggg last 3 miles or so.

Think I might have a photo around from the race...I know it's probably not a race you see often around here, but it definitely will completely push you to your limits.

Edit: found it...I'm on the right side in the front...you can see the hurt in my face lmao
