Your weird request of the day!

My tri club is having a custom clothing order and I'd like to get a top, but the company's sizing chart is based on a tri top that you already own and fits you well, rather than measurements I can do myself! Having never done a triathlon before, obviously I don't own a tri top I can match it up with.

I'm hoping someone around my size can help me out by measuring their tri top for me and comparing it to this chart and suggest which size I should get.

Fortunately, I have the option of adding 2 inches to the length of the top...so I am guessing I will end up a medium + 2 inch length or a large + 2 inch length. But it would be nice to get some feedback before I drop $70 on an ill-fitting top!

Thanks for your time, I fully realize this is somewhat ridiculous.

I'm 6'3" and anywhere from 172-176 lbs most of the time.

I wear a large tri top from Pearl Izumi and it fits perfectly. I'll measure it tonight and send the dimensions along with my torso measurements for your comparison.

I'd get the large with the extra length. I'm 6'5 and around 185 in season. My larges (Champion systems and DeSoto) fit great but do ride up a little even with the extra length.

Do you have anywhere you can go to try some on and take measurements from that?  I know it may be tough to do, but sizing is very tough to do... and is why I don't buy this type of stuff on-line unless it is a "known item".

For example I'm ~5' 6" and weigh around 135 but I wear a medium in most tops, smalls in others and some small I just can't wear because they are too small.  Also I'm bigger up top (as big as 135 pound guy could be!) and find that I'll almost always wear a small tri/bike short but a medium from the same line of clothing. My favorite kit is a TYR Competitor and its a small bottom and a medium top.

That would be the ideal situation for sure, but even my local bike store here doesn't have any in stock right now and would have to order them in based on measurements.

Definitely get the extra length.  My first tri top rode up like a tube top within 15 seconds of running.  Luckily, I tried it out at home on a pre-dawn run.

My husband is about your specs. We finally went to a shop in search of a non-belly top.

He ended up with a TYR Carbon outfit. The top is large. Maybe you could find a spec online? I have no idea where he stores his tri gear in the winter.

Sometimes you just have to go with it!

So here are the measurements of my Pearl Izumi In-R-Cool Elite Top: A) 16", B) 26", C) I totally botched this and measured the vertical length of the back and not the waist size...oops. The vertical length was 26" if it helps. The tail is longer in the back than the front by about an 1" or so. A lot of people who have reviewed this jersey on REI complain about it begin too long, but I think it's perfect so maybe most of them are just short?

Here are my measurements: A/Chest circumference) 40.25", B/Torso from shoulder to waist) 24", C/Waist circumference) 31"

Note: I'm all legs with a shorter torso for my height.

Now that you have all of that, I'm not sure it will help you any. The measurements of my Pearl top don't seem to jive with any listed in the chart on the link you provided. Personally, for myself, I would order the large with the 2" of extra length.

Hopefully this will be somewhat useful to you. Good luck.

Appreciate the measurements marti038! I went into this thinking the large + 2 inches would be for me, and I see two votes for it so I'm just gonna roll with it. Should at least be close.

Dominion, I'm not sure if I have the abs to pull off that look!

I wish I could help, but this is more of a sympathy post as I'm similarly built (6'5", 195) and worry about sizing too. I ordered a tri top and shorts in December and have never actually worn them in a race. I wore them during a swim workout and it seemed like the shorts fit perfectly but the bottom part of the shirt flapped a little bit in the water, causing drag. Whether this means it will ride up on the bike and run, or flap and cause drag, remains to be determined.

We are often asked the question, "What size frame should I buy" and the answer is “it depends”. I know that’s not the answer you want to hear, but hopefully the following will shed some more light.

I have pedals with the cage and when I ride 2+ hours my legs feel much more tired then if I took out my husband's bike with clipless pedals. Do clipless pedals truly make the difference?

I started riding this spring with the Carnac shoes on Look pedals (with plenty of float). About five minutes into a ride I get sharp pain on the outer edge of my feet, just behind the pedal.
