Pre-race routine:

Week 3, I'm In! I decided to give week 3 a try since I had nothing else to do on a Saturday (daughter working, son working out of town). I got a late start heading to the park, I got to the signup tent at 12:20 with a race start at 12:30! My warmup was the 1/4 mile ride from my car to the start line.
Event warmup:

There was none.
Bike
  • 40m 17s
  • 17.1 miles
  • 25.47 mile/hr
Comments:

With no warmup I was hoping I could just sit in the pack and warm up gradually before any kind of hammering happened. Luckily it wasn't too crazy the first few laps. This was a 20 lap crit with prime points on the 6th and 11th laps.

It was a slightly larger field than last week with 35 riders so I figured I wouldn't be in the running for any prime points or the finish. So I decided to have a little fun.

After about the 4th or 5th lap 5 guys took off from the front and after a lap or two that number shrank to two. Those two took the two primes and finished 1-2 so the race for for 3rd.

So after the first prime lap was finished the pack slowed a bit and I surged ahead to the front, taking them by surprise. As i was going around you could hear them yell out, especially team members of the guys at the front. I was the only guy on my team doing Cat 4/5. That gap I created didn't last long but I got one full lap in front so hopefully the photographer got a nice picture of me ;)

So then after the group swallowed me up I got right back in and stayed with them for a another few laps. Then, after the 2nd prime lap was completed I surged again. This time it was close, I cut in to the left turn just as the lead guy was beginning a wide left turn. I didn't really creat a gap there for long but I led the pack around for 3/4 of a lap. Again, just hoping they got a good picture of me. After that I just sat in the pack until the sprint to the finish.

This wasn't an easy pace, even drafting guys in front of you 25.5 mph average is no picnic, especially when your turns aren't so hot and you have to punch it to get back onto a wheel.
What would you do differently?:

Warm down:

Did a couple cool down laps, then rode down to the lake and back.

Event comments:

I really had fun today. I'm not taking this too seriously as tris are my favorite events but hopefully this road bike racing stuff will pay dividends in my tri events.

Kudos to you for being brave enough to race all these crit races!  I love how you liked being in front, hoping some good pics were taken, ha ha ha!  Nice work, Reece, it's fun following your race progress.

Yeah, being in front is fun, especially because you can pick your line on the fast turns. Unfortunately I only get a couple opportunities these days.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
