Pre-race routine:

Raced the Cat 4/5 a couple hours earlier. Saw two of my teammates getting ready for a warm-up ride as I was walking back to my car to do the same.
Event warmup:

Rode to the lake and back, then one lap around the course. I wasn't sure how I'd do this time after the effort I gave in the earlier race. My teammates were talking a strategy of sorts but I wasn't sure I'd have the legs to execute. Abe took 4th a couple weeks ago and he was on fresh legs.

Comments:

Race started pretty quick, I had trouble clipping in so had to play catch up for the first 1/4 lap. This was only 9 laps and a prime on lap 5. I had to work hard to stay with the front group but when we got to the prime lap I was barely able to stay at the back of the pack.

After that first prime I started to fade from the main lead group. I kept fighting and finally on lap 8 I caught back up. That was some work! Then as we started the last lap the group slowed so figuring I wouldn't have the final sprint legs in me I tried to go early and see if I could create a gap and see if I could hold on (after playing catchup for 3 laps, yeah right...).

I heard my teammate shout "go Reece", he was sitting in 4th or 5th at the time. I did create a small gap for the next two turns but on the last turn heading to the finish they caught back up. 7 guys passed me as i was only 50 feet or so from the finish then one more guy passed me at the line which put me out of any points. Oh well. Even if I had stayed in and sprinted at the finish I'm not sure I would have made the top 8 anyhow.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This crit racing has been a nice diversion from the norm. Maybe I'll be back next week.
Post race
Warm down:

Took a cool down lap around the course.

Event comments:

Good fun, a nice change to non-draft legal riding.

Oh, man!  So close to point contention!  Way to hang in there with tired legs.

Thanks Melanie, it's been really exciting, well maybe 95% exciting and 5% scary. Or maybe 95% scary and 5% exciting...but that's what make it so intense

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
