Wilmington, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 59m 1s
Overall Rank = 115/600
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/27
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special. Banana....couple pop tarts; drive an hour and get set up.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 05m 39s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

With a sore knee (and them not allowing diving), I stepped over the timing mat before entering the pool (slid in at the wall). I pushed off and got going.
What would you do differently?:

I obviously went out too quick and panicked a little at about 125yds (thought I was out of breath). I got it back together in a lap or so and finished up under control and strong. I passed 2 people in the pool and nobody passed me. 6 mos. ago I couldn't swim 200yds without stopping.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I've only worn my helmet a few times and it took a few seconds to get it buckled.. My rack was the furthest from bike out and bike in. That meant I had to run with my bike shoes on for a fairly long distance. In the overall scheme of things, it only cost a few seconds. Luck of the draw, I guess. From pool exit, you had to run down 2 flights of stairs and outside the building.....and maybe 200yds to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I can think of.
Bike
  • 25m 46s
  • 9 miles
  • 20.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really confident on the bike. I was hoping to make 20 mph and I exceeded that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, for this course. This was my strongest leg.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Again, I had to run the full length of transition in my bike shoes. Overall, T2 was a lot better than T1.
Run
  • 24m 44s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Seemed like it took forever to get to the turnaround. I was redlined the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I should have eaten a little more before the race. Probably should have drank more, too.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and watched others finish......ate and drank a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably nothing. I ran a good race for my fitness level.

Event comments:

With over 600 people signed up for a sprint, I think they did a great job - all the way around. No hitches that I heard of, all day. Weather ended up being perfect. Very fun short race. I redlined the entire event. It hurt - a LOT.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
