Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: OK.....So I bought a Wheel Cover I bought a Wheelbuilder wheel cover a while back (for my Flo 90). I haven't installed it yet, but I want to. I have another tri coming up in 2-1/2 wks. Is there anything to be concerned about (running the wheelcover)? I will say that the wind affects handling (though it feels like that's all in the front wheel) running the deeper wheels (v. my trainers). I just have no experience with a disc (or, covered wheel). What say ye? No biggie? It affects handling "some"? I have no idea what to expect. My tri is on the coast, so there are no hills. But, I have one in May with hills. As light as the cover is, is weight a concern (or, is it typically the only concern) on whether or not to use a disc on a particular course? I appreciate the lessons. Thanks. |

Oakville | Subject: RE: OK.....So I bought a Wheel Cover I asked BT this question a few years ago and the consensus was to use the disc cover unless its so windy that the RD bans them. Personally, in 5 years of racing I have only seen one race where the wind was so bad that rear discs were banned. IIRC the gusts were > 60 km/hr. In my last race of 2015 it was quite windy but I didn't experience any handling problems. I prefer to install the cover with electrical tape around the entire edge, but the clips work fine too. |

Subject: RE: OK.....So I bought a Wheel Cover As above, unless banned always use the cover. You probably won't notice a difference in handling, as it's the front wheel that really affects handling not the rear. In fact there is (at least anecdotal) evidence that it actually improves handling. I've ridden one in a high wind warning at wildflower and it was fine. The hed3 on the other hand was a nightmare. I just used the clips in every race. I tried using tape once but didn't really work with my rims, and started peeling off. Last thing I wanted was a piece of tape dangling off the back wheel. If I were you I'd install it the weekend before the race and ride with it to make sure it's all good. Use good tape (i use duct tape) to tape the drive side to the interior spokes HEre's a couple good articles on the issues http://www.fiftyonespeedshop.com/#!Weight-vs-Aero/c1mdd/FB71683D-3927-4236-945B-584611DAB082 http://www.fiftyonespeedshop.com/#!Should-I-Ride-A-Disc/c1mdd/E0ADBA6E-BB4D-4AD5-87AD-95FF648C9D81 Edited by ChrisM 2016-03-31 12:33 PM |

Never had an issue with it, I know one can get it at home depot. |

Extreme Veteran 1332 | Subject: RE: OK.....So I bought a Wheel Cover So far my experience with it has been really positive. The bulk of it has left nothing, even with use in the heat, the worst I had was at the VERY edge of the tape, where a little dirt and that stuck to the very side of the tape, and you had that little bit with the tape removed, which came off very easily. |

I added the small holes on the drive side for using tiny black tie-wraps to hold it tight by the cassette. When I went to 11 spd I had some chain rub so I did this after I saw a guy on ST do it. They're just above the chain and can't really see them, sure they're not doing any harm aero-wise. |

One 15 minute shake-out ride and then I used it on race day and loved it. Noticeably faster. Very stable, even on a day with 15 mph winds. That was in 2011 and I have used it for pretty much every race since then. It may add a little bit of weight for climbing but I still think it is overall faster. I did IMTahoe with it in 2013 and American Triple T with it, both very hilly races, and didn't regret using it at all. |

Unless you are doing a point to point bike course that averages 5% or more, use the cover. So basically, always use the cover unless they are not permitted. Shane |

( seems it did! ) I have made the cut-out for the valve stem larger than pictured so that I can get my regular pump on the thing, made me much happier than using the crack pipe Edited by dfquigley 2016-04-03 8:38 AM (CNJ4yXYVEAAUUdg.jpg large.jpg) (disc7.jpg) Attachments ---------------- CNJ4yXYVEAAUUdg.jpg large.jpg (112KB - 2 downloads) disc7.jpg (54KB - 2 downloads) |
