Subject: Lingo lesson
Ok folks, even though I've been running and biking for a little while now I have never done intervals. I've been told that these will help increase my skill level and hopefully help with my asthma problem. BUT! I don't know what the lingo means! So when I look up training plans I'm completely lost! Ex: 4x4, 4x6, at 70%, meters, etc!

Any help with this or any insight and advice for working with breathing issues would be awesome!

I would think for running 400m done 4 times, 400m done 6 times. Not sure of the context of the rest

should be a rest period for the interval. such as 4x400 meters with 100 m rest (%HR rest, etc). = run 400 m at a certain pace, HR or feeling then run/jog a rest period for 100m.

Intervals are a balance of effort and rest. Typically the higher the effort, the higher the rest in relation. Although rest shouldn't exceed exertion period (i.e. a 4 min interval would not have a higher than 4 min rest)

So when I see 4x4 that means to run 400 meters 4 times? I literally don't know what the shorthands mean. I get the idea of intervals but I don't know what the short hands mean.

The lingo / terms are generally going to be specific to the sport. However, generally, the workouts are written with a (number of repetitions) x (work interval) with a (rest or recovery period)
So 4x4 would likely be (4 reps) x (4 minutes of work - with an intensity often written as a % of your threshold or a % of your RPE ...

You will need to read the article here on Beginner Triathlete on threshold testing.
Also read about RPE , which means your Rate of Perceived Effort.
Much of this will be explained in the 'Articles' tab on the front page, in the 'training' section. Lots of reading, which you can do while stretching
