73F / 23C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 56m 42s
Overall Rank = 667/1184
Age Group = F 45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/50
Pre-race routine:

woke up, grabbed transition bag and walked from hotel to transition. Set up transition, talked to friends, ate yogurt and Hammer Gel.
Event warmup:

None other than getting in water to validate my decision not to wear a wetsuit.
Swim
  • 33m 35s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Decision not to wear the wetsuit was a good one. Water felt very warm and I would have been hot. Water was so calm - best conditions I've ever seen at this race.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start a little more toward the front
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

mount line was crowded and I had trouble getting started because there were slower people in front of me. Otherwise a nice easy fast transition
What would you do differently?:

mount more toward front
Bike
  • 1h 21m 3s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.61 km/hr
Comments:

I was very happy with my pace but I probably could have pushed it a little more. The last mile was crowded with people doing the sprint who wouldn't let you pass so that slowed me down a bit
What would you do differently?:

practice more turning to become more confident
Transition 2
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

again, crowded entering the transition area and I got stuck between two people who were chatting. Did good with focusing just on getting my shoes on and leaving the hat and number belt for when I was actually running.
What would you do differently?:

this is the only stage in which I was slower than in previous years (although only by 3 seconds). Maybe zip laces. But otherwise good
Run
  • 56m 47s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 41s  min/km
Comments:

not sure why my pace got so much slower. I did slow down for water several times . There was not a lot of shade on the course so I was getting hot.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure - probably start training to do negative splits
Post race
Warm down:

walk around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Age and genetics :) I felt great after this race and was happy with how I had trained.

Event comments:

Love this race! So organized and fun. They may need to alter the sprint a little to keep them from merging with the olympic participants on the bike - it got very crowded toward the end. Great volunteers, too, especially at the finish!

Doug was one of the few swimming coaches who really appreciated how important swimming technique is and would spend as much or more time with his athletes making sure they got it right.

The triathletes really inspired me. I watched them in awe as childlike thoughts went through my head like, "I want to do that!" But then reality set in. “Who are you kidding?

I’ve signed up to do the St. Anthony’s Olympic Triathlon in April. I will be 49 in May and need some advice on a good training program to fit into my full time work schedule.
