Comments:

swim was a straight shot down intercoastal waterway in myrtle beach. water was about 70. with current so pretty quick swim. water was pitch black. yuck. straight into the sun so but since it was a straight shot it was easier just to use the shoreline to spot
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder on the swim.

tough course for me since I don't do much mountain biking. It took a lot of energy out of my legs for the run. Fun course but lots of short steep ascents. Wrecked once missing my line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

mountain biking skils

Event comments:

Very fun race. Swim was easy with current. mass in water start. 1 wave. Bike trail is very cool and interesting. I had fun but was slow on the bike since my technical mountain biking skills need work. Other athletes were friendly on course working well with me when they needed to pass. Lots of encouragement from other athletes on bike course and on run. Even though I did not place well it was an enjoyable race.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

Immediately I felt attracted by the challenge. I have done plenty of biking this summer and a new motivation, particularly toward the end of the summer, was what I needed.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
