Comments:

The run went about as well as I expected. I walked the water station and one particularly steep hill, which I can live with considering this was my first race in almost 2 years. While I was a bit frustrated to lose a few runners towards the end that I'd been even with the whole time, I'm satisfied with my overall pacing. My knees didn't bother me, which was a concern going into the race.
What would you do differently?:

Get in more trail-specific training beforehand.

Event comments:

This is a great, no-frills trail race. The organizers do a good job getting it started on time, there are plenty of volunteers at key intersections to keep you from missing a turn, and the overall atmosphere is great. The course isn't too technical, but has enough hills, rocks, and roots to keep things interesting. This is my second time racing, and I'll definitely be back.

Most of the races are flat here, but I live in the area where I could do hilly rides with 1500-2000m of climbing. Is there much benefit with that if I am racing flat?

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

Can't run outside in the snow? Think again. I flew up the first hill with surprising ease and power. The Yaktrax gripped into the ice like racing spikes on a rubber track. Sweeeeet.

When we get ready to train or race, we have a pretty fixed set of thoughts. We are unaware of how they affect our racing.
