High Five Events
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 54m 22s
Overall Rank = 32/877
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/40
Pre-race routine:

Don't eat Clif bars before races! Wanted to barf that thing up on the bike and it's really not the first time.
Event warmup:

About 2 minutes in the water. Active stretching.
Swim
  • 05m 37s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Probably the roughest lake swim I've ever done. Wind was blowing straight across the lake so waves were pretty bad.
What would you do differently?:

Same thing as every other race, train more!
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Overall pretty good. Wish I hadn't bothered putting my watch on the handlebars because the zeroing of the PM didn't work anyway.
Bike
  • 30m 53s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 21.76 mile/hr
Comments:

Not too sure about the overall rank because the open wave times were all jacked up. First in the AG was only 10 seconds faster. No idea what my power output really was because I forgot to zero the PM before the race and it was definitely reading low. I wouldn't have placed that high on just 192 watts.
What would you do differently?:

Solid bike. Not sure any changes are necessary
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Actually had to tie my shoes today because I couldn't find my Zoots.
Run
  • 14m 17s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Probably could have gone a little harder.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim, of course. Better training may have given me the 18 seconds I was short of winning the AG.

Event comments:

Typical quality event from High Five. Can't go wrong with their races.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
