Event warmup:

Nothing specific, we arrived at the start to find the swim was cancelled so just got ready for bike start.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1900 meters
  • / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 3h 25m 16s
  • 90 kms
  • 26.31 km/hr
Comments:

Conditions were very cold due to the strong wind. I wore a merino and a fleece-lined hoody with hood on under my helmet for the whole bike leg, it was that cold.
I started up a bit fast but once warmed up was OK. I started in an early wave and didn't pass a single person but I'm pretty used to that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, by that time I was treating it as a training ride. If I can't swim I don't get any advantage.
Transition 2
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Slow transition as had several layers to remove and very cold. Kept my gloves on for the first few kilometres then threw them to supporters.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 54m 2s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 24s  min/km
Comments:

Enjoyed the run but it was still windy and cold. The supporters motivated me and the course was varied enough with a few hills.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to previous day's nutrition - something upset my tummy.
Post race
Warm down:

Back to hotel, slice of cheese pizza, shower, more food and champagne. Stretching and compression clothing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slight overhydration and upset tummy.

Event comments:

The location and course for this race were great and it was unfortunate that the weather was so cold that the swim had to be cancelled. What really let the organisation side down from my point of view were:
1. Many of us had to queue for 3-4 hours outside in the cold wind waiting for a medical exam before being able to register. This is required in some countries if you are not a member of a triathlon team and therefore do not have a licence to race.
2. The race organisers had not recognised the need for Adequate toilet facilities on registration day.
Although the weather conditions were not ideal, I enjoyed the race and would go back. Next time I will make sure I have my race licence in advance of registration.

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
