We just saw this great doc on netflix about the crazies who race the transamerica bike race. Over 300 miles per day for 2 weeks straight, sometimes more. Sleep? Forget it. An amazing race, crazy and super tough riders, a cervelo S5, lots of disc brakes, and a great movie! Highly recommended if you like any endurance sports (and even if you don't).

That's an awesome video. I am doing my 1st century ride on Saturday. Can't imagine riding that much a day. Crazy!

Me neither.
But they didn't do it for a day, they did it for weeks !

Not sure how they did it, but amazing to watch.

At the end of the movie they list the finishing times of everyone and some people took MONTHS to complete the whole thing. Fun film to watch though just when you think of the sheer mileage they are doing every day, day after day. Nuts.

I'll have to watch the video later.

My son leaves next weekend on a supported ride with Bike the US for MS to ride 4,295 miles from Bar Harbor, Maine to Seattle, Washington.  They'll ride 70-80 miles most days for 68 days, and sleep in individual tents.  It should be a great experience for him, but there's no way I'd want to sleep in tents while spending that many hours every day in the saddle.

But is he doomed?

LOL!  Well, he struggled to do all the training that Coach Dad prescribed (stupid college professors didn't seem to realize he had an event to train for!), but he still did enough since his last HIM last fall that he's far from doomed.

Looks like a great watch while spending some time on the trainer.  My wife and I were watching a documentary on the RAAM and talking about how tough something like this would be.  No support ups it to a whole other level of toughness.

That sounds like an awesome adventure. Best of luck to him

Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed the movie. That's sad there was a fatality.
I did some more reading on the competitors and discovered Tour Divide.
I'm looking for a documentary on this now because it looks really interesting.

Info on the route can be found here:
http://tourdivide.org/about_the_route

Also, there was a rock climbing thread not long ago, and noticed a rock climbing documentary on NF as well called Valley Uprising.

A friend of mine attempted the Tour Divide. It was so completely brutal, I can't even imagine. I like backpacking okay and certainly enjoy time on my bike, but the combination of the two to this magnitude is both inspiring and insane. More power to those that can/will/do.

Did I read that correctly? I woman won first place in this year's Trans Am.
With not much surprise Mike Hall took Tour Divide.
These record numbers keep going.

Wow - this is definitely getting added to the list of stuff I need to watch!

I just watched the documentary on the Barkley Marathon, which is also pretty crazy, but this is a whole new level.  I'm hugely impressed and kind of intrigued... and at the same time, my undercarriage is saying nope, nope, nope, nope, NOPE!

I will have to check this out. Looks cool. As somebody mentioned Race the Divide. I highly recommend checking it out. One of the better documentaries. here is the trailer.

I also enjoyed the Barkley Marathon doc but not quite as well produced and compelling. The race is just ridiculous though.

Thanks. He's now 4 weeks about 1,800 miles into the ride. Other than crossing wheels with a guy, which resulted in 6 hours in the Rochester, NY ER, facial road rash, a taco'd from wheel, and 20 miles missed, he's doing well. He was back on the road the next day. Here's his blog, including pics of the road rash: http://chanbikestheus.tumblr.com

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
