I have two 70.3's that are 7 wks apart. I really want to do well in the 2nd. I have no issues treating the 1st as a big training day. My question is - what is "good enough" condition so that the 1st doesn't beat me down too much.......without sacrificing periodization for the second?

Does that make sense? Mainly concerned over the run. The bike and swim.....I'm OK with where I am.

Plan was to ramp up to 33 mpw for the "A" race. I'd be at about 28 mpw for the 1st with my long run being 11 mi. (the week before the 1st 70.3).

Sound OK? I could still make the first race an international dist. I haven't committed to it, yet.

that's tons of time.

Take a slow week after the race.

Then look at what you could do better at the next race and pick 2 things to work on and work on them for 4 or 5 weeks then taper.

Your base should already be good so not much of a need to worry about that.

I like to race a HIM every 6 weeks if I can 1 week recover 4 weeks train than 1 week taper.

If you're concerned about your ability to recover and get back to training in a week, then make the first the oly distance.  Otherwise, race the first hard, recover for a week, and then get back to training for the second.

I would be worried about what it would take out of me, if I planned to race the 1st. I don't, though (plan to race it).

Maybe I asked a poor question.

I need to be able to get enough volume in so the run doesn't suck on the 1st. If you only had one 70.3 to run in 17 wks.....what would your total run volume and long runs look like at 17 and 7 wks out? How many weeks out would you do your longest run and highest volume?

Thanks.

If you don't plan to race the first, do the oly.  Race it.

I know there's a mental benefit to me doing the 70.3 (in lieu of the Internat.). If there's no negative from a training perspective, I'm going to do it. If there is (a negative - from a training perspective), let me know what that might be.

The first course is a tougher course than the second.

You have more than enough time for both races. I wouldn't worry about it all - happy training

Have you done a 70.3 before?

The negative is lost opportunity.  You will get greater benefit by racing (or, alternatively, by skipping the 'race run-through' and just training normally--not needing any reduced load prior, or recovery after).  If the first course is tougher, and you have doubts about your readiness to race it, then do the oly.  There is more benefit (likely both physical & mental) in having a good race prior to your A race than doing a 'go through the motions' day.  And you give up very little preparation time for your A race, too.

Never done a 70.3 race. I've done all the distances (and beyond)....just never together.

So, there''s that

The distance doesn't give me cause for pause. A live run-through of my nutrition plan would likely make me more at-ease for the Sept. race, though. The timing (between races) just seems right, also. I was going to do the International, anyway.....and then the thought to do the 1/2 surfaced.

To test your nutrition plan (any better than you can do in training), you need to do it at race intensity (ie, race).

You can do the half, but you really should race it if you do.  You will learn more from it and get more out of it.  You should probably be OK to recover in a week and get back to regular training.  But if you have any doubts about that part (or would feel really let down if things didn't work out as smoothly), then you should stick to the oly and race it well.  If your training is such that the distance doesn't give you pause, then you will be good to go for your A race and you will know that you are well prepared.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.
