Why Racing Events

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 28m 53s
Overall Rank = 56/272
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/24
Pre-race routine:

pb bagel and banana, water and Gatorade before
Event warmup:

5 min jog with some skips and high knees
Swim
  • 28m 18s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

swim cap came off after 2nd buoy - swam holding it for a few minutes then turned on back to get back on - lost 5-10 seconds there. Otherwise felt focused and solid on swim - even got a noticeable draft between 1st and 2nd buoy which was good - good sighting
What would you do differently?:

make sure cap is on SECURELY next time. could maybe pick up pace a touch
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

great getting suit to knees, got slightly stuck on first heel but able to quickly get off by hand - did put on fit bit which takes a few seconds - got into R shoe okay but L shoe got a bit smashed down, took a bit to get into it
What would you do differently?:

push few feet past mount line - got crowded and to tight for good flying mount
Bike
  • 1h 07m 3s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.24 mile/hr
Comments:

found myself sort of in between 2 gears on back ring - larger gear had cadence around 93-95, smaller gear had cadence around 87 - just didn't quite have enough to push the harder gear to 90, but in last 6-8 miles got it dialed in and had a 24 mph stretch to finish strong - took a gel @ mile 14
f-ing GPS turned off and never caught it
What would you do differently?:

felt water bottle was an issue - too full to get a good pinch to get out - tried to fill bar bottle but cap too tight to get - for future hot races better to get a 2nd bottle behind saddle, also don't fill up felt bottle so high - lost some time on the uphill messing with it
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

good T2 - raced in at a good clip - bit of struggle with left 2nd shoe getting on
Run
  • 49m 58s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

cadence a bit too low - 87 avg
felt strong and focused on run - especially first 3 miles - got some shade here also - last 3.2 were hard until I got back into park - had enough for a sprint finish - inside of both quads pretty crampish at start, walked through aid stations to fully hydrate due to heat - pace is about :30 off last years, but researching hot temps this is exactly what I should have expected
What would you do differently?:

went out too fast at start, think needed to save more energy for 2nd half which was sunnier and hotter
Post race
Warm down:

walking around, water, some stretches

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HEAT HEAT HEAT!
hydration issues on the bike likely cost bike split PR, swim was a PR by 3 seconds but should have been by closer to 10.

Event comments:

overall 56/272 - top 21%
AG 7/24 - top 29%
Males 51/176 - top 29%

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Four months ago I set upon a journey to train for and complete a triathlon, and a few Sundays back I raced in the Blue Water Triathlon in Parker, Arizona.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
