I've been looking a the water temp for an ocean swim I have on Sat. It's gonna be a game-time call, I'm sure. It'll change what I wear (kit)....is the main reason I'm interested.

Got me thinking, though......where do they take the temp readings? Also, I hear people speak as if the race director magically finds water somewhere that makes the race wetsuit legal. If I'm a race director, I'd want it to be legal, too...........but.........isn't the USAT official on-site the person that's responsible for getting the readings?

Just curious.

RD makes the call, not USAT. If the water temp is warm enough to be a wobbler there's usually a place they can find less than 76.1 or whatever it is (which is super warm). Plus water will usually be a little cooler following overnight temps. I did Silverman 2014 which was allegedly just wetsuit legal. I would not do that again in a hot race.

I hear you. If anything, I'll wear core shorts. I won't wear a wetsuit (per se).

It's gonna be close. I'm not worried about the distance. But, I know I'm faster in the core shorts and I won't turn down free speed.

I wouldn't either.   But (not that this is an issue here, and just MO), depending on conditions wearing  wetsuit or not may not only affect swim speed, it may affect the later legs of the race if it's hot enough.   People only seem to think in terms of swim speed and forget that it's a triathlon, not a swim race.

Having been trained as a USAT official by Charlie Crawford (head of USAT officiating), it is done by race officials IF a USAT sanctioned race, NOT the RD. That official can give discretion if someone else can take it. Measurement is to be taken at least one hour before the start. Measurement can be taken at or near shoreline or on a pier as well. The "bucket method" is good for ocean measurements.

THanks for the clarification   99% of my races are so cal ocean races so don't think anyone is doing any official measurement other than lifeguards...    eta just asked my RD friend, runs a USAT race, is not required to have a USAT official present.    So in that case it is the RD's "call" I guess but moot with our 62 degree waters.   Maybe they're required where it might be an issue, but I dont see that on USAT's site.

Yeah.....I can't imagine a USAT official will be on-hand.....although I have seen them at 2 out of 4 of my races, so far this year.

If it is borderline.....for a USAT sanctioned AG race they will find water that makes it wetsuit legal, for a USAT sanctioned ITU race they will find water that makes it no wetsuit.  It's pretty easy to find a degree or two either way this time of year.

You gotta play to your "audience".

I'm doing my first tri Saturday. It starts at 7 AM and the forecast is calling for a high of 82 (air temp). Do I need to rush out and get a wetsuit?

Being lean isn't all wine and roses. The reduction in body fat has, unfortunately, also made me a slower swimmer. I have also become a real wimp in cold of any kind.

The toll of fate strikes as those with orange swim caps are beckoned to begin the journey. Ahhh, nothing like the feel of ice cold water seeping in your wetsuit to wake you up. GO!
