TriRock
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 00m 43s
Overall Rank = 536/881
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 368/523
Pre-race routine:

2-3 Nature Valley Bars, coffee, some water. Overall not anything out of the ordinary.
Event warmup:

None really, just a couple of dynamic stretches. Tried to keep my nerves down and remained as calm as possible before the start.
Swim
  • 32m 23s
  • 800 meters
  • 04m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

I fully expected to use a wetsuit as I have a fear of drowning, but the water temperature didn't allow for it. I was still going to wear the wetsuit but I would have had to start in the last wave and I wanted to be with my training partners so I ditched the wetsuit.
The first 300-400m, the rookie panic set in. Some people grabbed my feet and a little crowding going on. Grabbed every possible kayak during that stretch for a couple seconds. Then I swam onto the wrong side of the buoy so to correct myself, I swam back onto the course, but too far into the middle where there was nothing to really grab on to. This forced me to swim my normal swim and I got into my normal rhythm. If it kept record, the 2nd half of my swim was definitely better than the first half. As I got out of the water, I was completely disoriented. Walked side-to-side for a little while cuz of dizziness.
What would you do differently?:

NOT PANIC. Swim onto the other side of the course (away from the buoys) to avoid others and get more space. Overall, a great learning experience.
Transition 1
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

Dizzy, very dizzy. The switch from swimming horizontal and getting out of the water was a struggle. Almost fell over in front of the crowd. Walked thru transition. Started trotting out to the bike mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of the water better, someway, somehow.
Bike
  • 53h 45m
  • 15.7 miles
  • 0.29 mile/hr
Comments:

I drank too much liquid during this. Could've been the Gatorade. Enjoyed the bike course a lot, not too difficult as my training rides have been longer and more difficult with challenging hills.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink Gatorade. Drink less towards the end of the bike ride to prep for the run. Possibly go harder for the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Came to a complete stop to dismount the bike. Very rookie like. But oh well. Still did well on the bike portion of the tri.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting on and off the bike for race purposes.
Run
  • 28m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Thought I could make up some time but my legs weren't listening to my brain for some reason.
What would you do differently?:

Do more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

4 beers and food from the food tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. Could've done the swim better if I didn't panic.

Event comments:

Overall, a great first triathlon. Had some bumps in the road but they are life lessons that I will learn from and hopefully overcome for the next race.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
