Arctic Triathlon Series (Amber Barlow)
51F / 11C
Overcast
Total Time = 6h 44m 26s
Overall Rank = 31/39
Age Group = 40-99
Age Group Rank = 5/7
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 0600. Had Coffee, Oatmeal and a banana for Breakfast. Continued hydration with plain water, the about 30 minutes prior to start had a water with ZippFizz added.
Event warmup:

A short run and some calisthenics.
Swim
  • 52m 49s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Began getting cramps in my calves about half way through the third lap. I know my hydration was good, and believe the cramps were caused by the cold water and my lack of doing cold water swims in training due to legal issues where I used to swim.
What would you do differently?:

I will get the authorizations I need to swim in my normal lake before next year or find a viable option.
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

Put shoes on before mounting bike. Did not have time to train putting shoes while riding and was not willing to chance a crash.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 16m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.11 mile/hr
Comments:

Had made several changes to my bike. Added new pedals and shoes, additional water bottles and new gear bags. I think the new pedals and shoes altered my geometry on the bike, based on comments from observers. This likely slowed me down some, though I felt pretty good about the ride. Nutrition was good, had a PB&J sandwich (quartered) that I had about every 40 minutes coupled with PowerGel every 20 minutes
What would you do differently?:

Have scheduled a bike fit to correct the above issues.
Transition 2
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Had purchased new running shoes and hadn't added my Lock Laces as yet, with that I did not get my shoes tied tight enough.
What would you do differently?:

Have all equipment race ready in time for event.
Run
  • 2h 28m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, my poor decision to use reasonably new equipment came out to bite me in the buttocks.. My new running shoes which I had run several times in I did not use the lock laces I usually do. With that I did not get my shoes tight enough in the beginning and that along with the rain, the wet shoes caused blisters on my heels which caused me issues and the need to walk at times. Nutrition was good, PowerGel at transition before the run and at the halfway point as well as banana's and Gummy Bears at the aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

As stated above, be ready with what works.
Post race
Warm down:

Hydration and nutrition, consisting of fresh fruit, water, followed by Burgers, salad and beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too many changes from what worked in training to what I did on race day.

Event comments:

Being a reasonable newbie and my first HIM this was a great event, fairly small field with lots of camaraderie. Talking with the other participants and organizers will definitely be better next year.

Great report, and way to go on your first 70.3! Sounds like there were some good learning experiences, too. I look forward to reading about your future races.
