Pre-race routine:

My bike and swim training have fallen to the wayside a bit as I have been focusing on long trail runs lately. With that in mind my main goal was to come in under 2 hours. I didn't even look up my time from last year for comparison.

Enjoyed my traditional pre-race sushi dinner followed by an early night. Woke up nice and early and drove across town to the race location.
Event warmup:

Checked in at set up my transition spot then got in a very short line for the swim. Getting an early start time (due to early registration) has it's perks!
Swim
  • 17m 36s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim and felt smooth the whole time. Seemed to go by quickly which is a good sign!
What would you do differently?:

Good swim overall.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

My lane had a ladder so getting out of the pool was a breeze compared to prior years due to the high deck. The only issue I had was my feet getting dirty from plant matter on the side walk so I spent a few moments cleaning my toes before putting on my socks.
What would you do differently?:

Wear sandals so my feet stay relatively clean.
Bike
  • 51m 20s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Only having ridden a handful of training rides in the last couple of months I wasn't planning on pushing too hard on the bike. My shoulder and back complained just a little bit and I was able to stay in aero position more than during my last training ride.

The course is mostly rolling hills through farms and vineyards so the terrain and scenery was enjoyable. Having an early start meant the course was mostly empty and I didn't pass anyone until after the turn around but was only passed by two other racers. Like the swim the ride seemed to go by quickly and my legs felt fine as I returned to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle prior to the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Smooth transition.
Run
  • 27m 15s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt better than expected and I let them carry me at the pace they wanted to go at. Much to my surprise the first mile pace was almost a minute faster than my usual (albeit slow and easy) training pace. Going up the big hill at the start of the last mile was slow and steady. After the peak it was all down hill and I finished strog.
What would you do differently?:

Good run, mot much I would change.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and stretched my legs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Without worrying about my time I actually finished almost 5 minutes faster that last year! Unfortunately I can't quite attribute it to training so it must have been a good day on the course for me.

Event comments:

Fun local race.

Great job!!

I've tried the running in sandals trick after the swim. It didn't work for me. My feet just slid around inside the "shoe" and I ended up taking them off half way between the swim area and the transition area. I was wearing flip flops, so your results may very depending on the type of sandal you pick.
