Subject: Watching the Olympics??
I know there are some very tech-y people on BT so just throwing this out here-haven't had much luck with local and online inquiries-

It looks like there is pretty much NO televised Olympics here in Vietnam beyond maybe coverage in Vietnamese of some of the soccer games, and none in English beyond the daily summaries on the CNN and BBC news channels. The online viewing options I've found either ask that you have a US-based cable service (which i don't, since I don't live in the US), or simply say, "This content is unavailable in your viewing area."

Assuming any coverage I get is going to have to be online rather than through my TV. Any ideas? I do have reasonably high-speed internet (meaning, generally I can stream Youtube with no problem) at home, and am willing to pay within reason to get coverage for the duration of the Games.

I'm sure that you'll be able to just go to youtube and type in the search bar "olympics, live" and it will give you any live stream. A lot of times people will take a stream from wherever and broadcast it on their own youtube channel. There was a lot of that going on during presidential debates.

Hope that works. All we have locally is Vietnamese-language broadcast of badminton, table tennis, and some men's soccer. Vietnam just isn't an Olympics powerhouse; interest in spectator sports is pretty much limited to soccer. I was able to do my long ride this AM while watching the opening ceremony (not the greatest quality video, but better than nothing) on an Indian channel that's on the Star satellite feed.

Did anyone read about the little Syrian refuge girl who's competing in the olympics as a swimmer? She has had quite a track record so far. When fleeing her country, her boat started sinking, so she jumped in the water and swam for hours to push the sinking boat and all it's occupants to shore.

I watched bike racing Saturday.  Absolutely incredible finish!  I know people live in different time zones and get delayed broadcasts so I won't post any spoilers but make sure you catch women's biking.

I was watching the men's biking on Friday and the announcer says, "....this is sort of a South American climate."  LOL  Ya Think?!

Syncho diving and gymnastics and swimming last night.

Yeah, the announcers drive me nuts during le Tour and here they are again

I watched the men's bike race, which was incredible. I'm about 60k from the finish on the women's.

Sadly, all are either blocked here or my Internet speed is too slow to make it work. I had thought about signing up for a VPN so I could stream overseas stuff, but we are experiencing a country-wide slowdown (supposedly a cable issue, I suspect a "political illness" or local channels wanting a monopoly on Rio coverage) and most days streaming wouldn't work for more than 5-10 seconds at a time. Have pretty much just given up. Sad about that--I'm a big track fan and there are a lot of hometown athletes (Eugene, Oregon--elite runners who train there and fellow Duck alumni) in the Games.

If you are able to stream, have you tried Sling TV?

https://www.sling.com/

I don't have cable, but didn't want to miss out on the action so got a month of this for $25 and can pretty much watch all the action now!

The only downside, is that the wife now has access to HGTV and there is only so many House Hunter shows I can watch... I guess it's the payoff you have to make!

Sadly, Sling is only available from within the US, as are many/most of the suggestions I've gotten. Sometimes it is the policy of the site; other times, the Vietnamese government is blocking the site or it just won't load.

Just truly P.O.'d.......There was finally some of what I would consider real sports for a few minutes last night--the Indian channel had a little of the women's heptathlon. But they false-started twice, and of course we then cut to weightlifting or team handball or shooting or some such sport that, with all due respect to those who dedicate their lives to it (I realize that long-distance triathlon and running are also about as exciting to the average spectator as watching paint dry) I could personally care less about. Grrrrr...... They had ONE NIGHT of swimming. That was it. If you love team handball or shooting, this is the place to be, I guess.
