Sunny
Total Time = 3h 24m 48s
Overall Rank = 189/252
Age Group = F25-29
Age Group Rank = 12/13
Pre-race routine:

Set up my transition area then go for a short 15min warm up run.
Event warmup:

They had a fitness coach do 10min of warm up stretches before the race
Swim
  • 25m 27s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 33s / 100 meters
Comments:

During the 1st 500m lap, I started out too quickly and was sighting every 5 strokes. This lead to my zig-zagging my way through the 500m and made me frustrated/tired. During the 2nd 500m lap, I got my mojo back. I slowed my pace down a bit and sighted every 3 strokes. This kept me in line with the course and feeling rejuvenated.
What would you do differently?:

Sight more often and start out slowly.
Transition 1
  • 05m 16s
Comments:

I really need to work on my transitions. I removed my cap and goggles on the way into T1, put on my helmet/sunglasses, dried off my feet, put on socks and shoes, and put on chamois cream. I was moving way too slowly and needed to speed up the process a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Practice my transitions more before a race
Bike
  • 1h 39m 1s
  • 25.8 miles
  • 15.63 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good time on the bike, albeit a bit slower than I wanted. I'm not used to rolling hills (even though some people might not consider these "hills"), being from a very windy flat city. The hills slowed me down a bit, but I made up for it during the headwind portions, when others were slowing down.
Transition 2
  • 04m 2s
Comments:

Again, I need to work on transitions. I put my bike up, took off my cycling cleats, put on my running shoes, took off my helmet, put on a hat and put on more sunscreen.
Run
  • 1h 11m 1s
  • 6 miles
  • 11m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The hot Texas summer heat definitely took its toll on me throughout the run. I tried my best to walk only at the aid stations, but there were 1 or 2 times were I had to walk at other points along the course. The trail is not very shaded so there was not much protection from the sun.
Post race
Event comments:

This was my first time doing JGT and I thought it was a great race. The organizers and volunteers were super helpful, the aid stations were well stocked and the post-race was fun. There were lots of tents set up with various companies giving away food or massages. They even had a beer tent, which was a nice perk. The only complaint I have is that the water bottles were cheaply made and the paint was falling off within 10min of me getting the bottle.

Spice up your training! Improve your VO2 max and threshold. If you are using this plan during the winter, you can start your specific training in the spring with a nice improvement in your speed.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.
