Overall Rank = 28/75

Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

I signed up for the race last minute, so I had to get there early and collect my stuff. I laid out my transition area and just spent some time relaxing until they opened the water for a pre-race swim.
Event warmup:

Short swim in the lake to loosen up and get a feel for the water
Swim
  • 34m 29s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

This entire day was basically a last minute tune up for the Augusta 70.3 next week. That being the case, I went into the day with the mindset to take everything at a training pace. Also, I have not been able to put in the time much this season, so I wasn't sure what my swim would be like.
The first 150 meters were your typical triathlon battle swim. Because this was a small race, they decided to launch everyone together, but after passing the first buoy, I spent most of the swim relatively alone
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Although not a great time, the swim was smooth and efficient and that was my goal
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Transition was set up rather strange. It was a long run up the hill from the water (fairly normal), but then you had to run quite a ways out of T1 to get to the bike mount. Again, this was based on the geography limitations and it was for the safety of the participants, just weird.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 5s
  • 25 miles
  • 18.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Fairly good day for the bike. Not my best pacing, but it fell right in line with treating this like a final shake-out before Augusta. The pavement is pretty rough for the most part, but I've certainly ridden worse.
I found a couple of guys to keep myself at a good pace. The three of us spent the race switching positions depending on the hills, etc. It really helped mentally to have someone to keep my eye on and make sure that I stayed on pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Run
  • 54m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Maybe some day that greenway will be completed and they can stop with the loops....
Anyway, pretty decent run course. Leave T2 and head down the road and then onto the greenway. The road is a decent hill which you have to run up twice. The greenway itself is flat, but you have to run a short, steep hill to get on and off of it. There is an aid station right before you enter the greenway so you hit that 4 times.
Decent run, not breaking any records, but I kept a good, consistent pace
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Event comments:

It's about what you'd expect from a small race. The town really supports it, so the roads are protected and I felt safe during the bike.
Also, they provide apple pie to the winners and homemade apple sauce to the age group winners! Quite a tasty prize.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
