Saw the new Cervelo P5X and the Diamondback Andean at the Ironman Kona Expo yesterday. I bet they are both fast, but quite frankly ugly to the point where I wouldn't care to ride them even if I got them for free. I know looks are a matter of opinion, but they're definitely out there...

The new BMC TimeMachine is a stunner though (and really excellent engineering with the cam actuated brake boost).

Interesting, I thought the P5X looks awesome, I might have to test ride one at a local TT sometime in the spring... :p I also have a friend with a Falco V and I thought they looked nice too, but prefer the P5X

I think the Diamondback one looks ugly though.

I think people are just going to either love or hate the look of those beam bikes. Always kinda have. I'm not sure yet. I've been waiting on the new Shiv to come out. Wonder if that's going the way of not UCI legal too!

I dunno, I like 'em both. The Cervelo, however, at $11-$14,000, is a "never gonna happen" situation. The Diamondback starts under $5k. That's a lot more than I've spent on a bike thusfar, but it's within the bounds of believeabilty. And I really dig the Moto-GP influence.

Did you see the P5X in person? It's MUCH worse in person than the photos. Just looks like a mishmash of parts slapped together.

As some one who has ridden Softrides in the past, I take issue with calling this new generation "beam bikes". Much like the Trek Y-foil design from years ago, these bikes don't have the forgiveness to even out much of anything as far as road buzz and shock absorption. But even so, I don't find them to be particularly ugly or beautiful. They're bikes built to do one thing well. One question that pops up on another forum I frequent is: will it take a 35mm tire?

I'll be happy to wait a year or two until the disc-brake fad passes.

I am in the market for a new road bike, at several local bike stores I will test ride several bikes. Other than basic fit and components, how should I compare them while doing a test ride?

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.

There is a marvelous destiny out there waiting for you too, but only if you are willing to take chances and put yourself on the line.
