Steamboat Express Triathlon - TriathlonMini Sprint

San Dimas, California
United States
Tri Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 59m 17s
Overall Rank = 13/104
Age Group = M 55-59
Age Group Rank = 3/
Pre-race routine:

First tri since September 2015--succession of injuries (thoracic spine compression fracture, broken 5th metatarsal, lumbar strain, broken left pinky toe) finally behind me. Was signed up to race the Semper Tri sprint at Camp Pendleton in early August as my first of the year...but I broke the pinky toe 24 hours before the race and had to DNS.. Bike fitness is about a good as it's ever been and I'm coming off a 3rd overall finish in a 30K trail run, so no question about run prep.
Event warmup:

A few sprints to test a new pair of (somewhat experimental) orthotics.
Swim
  • 05m 54s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Probably stayed a little too wide to first buoy, but was passing people the rest of the way. Expected to be around 5:30-6:00 for the swim (including run to mat) and was.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose all the body fat I decided to lose to focus on Boston and ultrarunning, maybe?
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Hadn't worn my sleeveless wetsuit in a tri (as opposed to a relay swim leg) in a couple years. Forgot how much tighter it is at the cuffs compared to my fullsuit. Lost 15-20 secs getting heels free.
What would you do differently?:

Practice a T1 in the suit.
Bike
  • 27m 55s
  • 8.64 miles
  • 18.57 mile/hr
Comments:

Really thought I was getting a flat on the rear tire on the big, 40mph, downhill early on. Took awhile to convince myself it was okay. Very familiar with the course. Had visions of maybe averaging about 20mph, but that was unrealistic on this course. Ended up around 19mph, which was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Not back off on the descent due to imaginary flat.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

This was acceptable, but I spotted that one of my Yankz was unsecured, so I wasted a couple seconds hooking it back in place. Anytime I get between 1:00 and 1:15 I'm happy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really.
Run
  • 21m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Excellent run--under PR open 10K pace, which is my normal target for a tri 5K. Passed the fastest guys in the next two AGs up...both of them local "name" athletes. Unsurprisingly, I had the fastest run in my AG, but also was 6th fastest runner of 104 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Chatted with a friend and another guy I didn't know. Ate some cookies.

Picked up my AG medal, hopped on the podium for some photos, won a DeSoto tri top in the raffle, went home.

My AG was stacked! Two guys finished in the top 6 overall. I was 13th overall, but that only squeezed me onto the podium in 3rd. Big cushion on the 4th place guy, though--I was one of only 14 finishers in the race under 1 hour. For once, I beat all the women in the race (by quite a bit, actually).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing much: I was aiming for 58-59 minutes and a top-2 AG finish. Got the time goal, but had to settle for 3rd in AG.

Event comments:

This Oly/sprint event has been around for years (this sprint was my 2nd ever tri in 2007...and remains my only AG win). A classic "local" race...always about 100 or so athletes in each of the two races, with a smattering of local elites.

Nice work and congrats on the podium finish. I grew up in San Dimas but have yet to do a tri there. Will have to plan a trip back home and Tri Bonelli one of these years. I think there are at least 3 races a year there if not more.
