Nope, not sarcasm, he ended up pushing me and taking a couple seconds off my harder efforts. He got in probably half way through my swim, we didn't line up at first as I was finishing up a ladder exercise but once I finished it was 5x100 and 5x50 and I swear he made it a point to take off 2-3 seconds after me every time. First couple I was going on the same rest, but then after a few I decided to take a few extra seconds, see if he was going on every 20 seconds but he clearly waited for me to go. Anyways, after 25y he'd catch me and end up passing after about 40 yards but man did I push myself closing it out. At least he was breathing relatively hard at the edge right next to me after every effort so even if he was toying with me, it makes me feel better that he had to push pretty hard to make me look slow, which doesn't take much really.

I've had that experience when my 14YO daughter does and swims with me, only she's not breathing hard.  :-/

Love when this happens!!

As for my daughter, she's 9, but she's definitely catching up fast!!

I'm going to try my best to stay ahead for as long as I can.

One of these days I won't be helping her with flipturns etc. but instead she'll be helping me!!

Hah!

I had an experience in which the guy in my lane and I raced for the whole of my 1500m swim. I joined him in the lane. It was an afternoon and I seem to swim best then. At first we were going relatively slowly but neither was gaining on the other. Circle swimming is the norm where I swim so it's easy to tell if one person is gaining on another- again, neither of us was getting anything on the other.

Then one of us decided to up the ante and pick up the page. But again, no gains by either of us. We continued like this for about 1300m then I noticed I was gaining on him ever so slightly. But then my 1500m swim was up and I stopped. I got a personal record of 25:30 for 1500m in a 25m pool (I was using my Poolmate so I know I didn't mess up on counting my laps). I have never been able to beat that. This was over a year ago.

But then he swam for another 30 minutes or so while I headed to the steam room so I didn't end up feeling so great, after all! It turns out he's an instructor at that pool and also a triathlete. He must do the half or full Ironman distance because there was no stopping him. I almost never go to that pool so I haven't gotten to know him.

So thanks fellow triathlete in my lane!

I can swim long with ease and have decent endurance, but I have a race coming up and I don't want to be last anymore. Help?

How familiar are you with the details of your stroke? Do you have ways, in the middle of a training set, perhaps while trying to keep up in a lane-circle, to keep your awareness acute?

I don't really strength train (because I never have and don't really know much about it) and feel like my lack of upper body strength is the reason why I'm not getting faster.

Sometimes the best way to master something is to be around people who are masters of it. For non-swimmers - there is the Master’s Swim group.
