Subject: Is this a cracked frame?
I am looking at a second hand Trek bike.

The owner said it was involved in a 17mph crash. Which results in such a thing shown in the video I am linking below. The photo shown is taken on the top tube.

I would like to ask the gurus in the forum to see whether it sounds like ( i had the owner do a quarter test, in which he knocked the frame with a coin. Note the 2 knocks at around the 9th second), or it looks like a real crack.

You actually need to tap around the crack and on top of the crack to hear the pitch difference. The video doesn't really tell.

However, from the looks of it, that doesn't look good.... It's entirely possible it was only 17MPH, but if you hit a hard edge, that's enough.I wouldn't feel safe riding it

I spent many years as a carbon fiber R&D engineer.

It may or may not be cracked; If it cracked I will tell you that CF has the tendency to fail catastrophic. That mean it will go in in instant and you will hit the deck without knowing what happened.

When I look at a CF bike if I have any doubt if there is a crack in it, I would walk away.
