Pre-race routine:

Got there at 7:25, had to find bib pickup. Found but then had to go to the bathroom and take a dump. That took forever. The national anthem was playing when I got to my stall. I decided to chill out and warm up by jogging back to my car and putting my tech shirt there.
Event warmup:

The Students Run LA racers were next by the time I returned to the starting line. There must have been 1000 of them! I warmed up using my normal warmup routine and hung around enjoying the race director's energy.
Run

  • 09m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

After the gun, I followed them way in the back and started reeling them in one by one successfully. Overzealous kids huh! hehehe! I bumped into a student accidentally which dislodged my left water bottle. I thought about leaving it but then no, I went back for it and I'm glad I did. :D

Focused on good cadence, form, and core and maintained a solid pace throughout. Also made sure I was careful about weaving around runners to pass. Didn't stop to walk once! Managed the ascents well mentally and physically. At mile 10 I wanted to go all out at 5K effort but calves were starting to buckle a bit due to the ascents around that marker so I kept pace HR at threshold and let it all out at mile 12. Lots of mental and physical effort there and finished strong! Yay!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Post race was nice. I had pretzels, Michelob Ultra, water, and blueberry yogurt. A nice massage to boot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The hills, hehe.

Event comments:

Really nice race. I may race it again next year depending how I feel after Long Beach Full Marathon. :)

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
