Overall Rank = 357/2810
Age Group = 30 - 34
Age Group Rank = 43/231
Pre-race routine:

It was nice to not have to leave my house at 4AM for a race. I woke up around 5:30, ate a bagel with PB and Honey and was on the road at 6:30. I sipped a bottle of Hammer Perpetum on the way to the race and I was feeling good and ready to race. I hit the bathroom and lined up in my corral ready for an 8:05 start.
Event warmup:

I did some easy stretching in my corral but that was all.

Comments:

This being my first marathon I was hoping to run under 4 hours. Knowing I also have a tendency to go out too fast, I watched my HR closely and did my best to make sure it didn't go above 150. The weather was perfect and despite running around 7:30 miles I was feeling great through the first 16 miles and I somehow PR'd the half marathon. Mile 17 was 8:14 and then I got a leg cramp at mile 18. I was hoping to run the whole race but once I hit mile 20, my legs were in a lot of pain and it was a long and painful slog to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

It's hard for me to say if I would have been able to finish stronger had I gone slower the first 15ish miles or if I just wasn't properly trained for the distance. Either way I'm happy I broke my goal of 4 hours and despite being incredibly stiff, I could still function the rest of the day.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a banana, a Cliff bar and immediately went with the family who were at the finish line for a huge burger with cheese fries.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics??

Event comments:

This was a very organized and fun race to run. There were several live bands throughout the course and it was nice to see all the people out cheering us on. My only complaint is there were only 2 gel stations and there was no water near them. I'm used to having to wash gels down with water so after having to spit one up, I had to wait until the next water station to pop a gel.

Great job! Congrats on your first marathon!

In my experience they always hurt, especially in those last miles, so it's good that you started out with a plan to keep the pace in check

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
