I ride a 56cm road bike and now I'm looking into a tri bike, I have an opportunity to buy a 56 cm tri bike, would that be too big or should I look for a 54cm.

If they're from the same brand, then MAYBE a 56 tri bike is the right size for you. If you compare two different brands, than the sizing number has no meaning at all. There's no such thing as a standard as to what the numbers mean, nor is there a standard as how to measurements are taken. So even with a geometry chart, it can be difficult to really understand if a bike will fit or not...

I ride an Orbea on both a tri & road bike. Both are the same size. Not sure if that's the same with all brands but my experience, for what its worth.

Don't rush into it. Triathlon is in a decline right now and you as a buyer have all the leverage. Take your time to get properly fit and see if your fit can properly accommodate the possibilities of what the frame can offer. Tri bike sizing can be very weird depending on what sort of position you adopt whether it be super slack, super upright, cramped, and extended.
