Age Group Rank = 6/23
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 in Cat City, coffee, banana bread, rolling at about 5. Parked at the lake, at transition around 5:45 or 6. Set up wandered around. I trotted the swim-out path. Dipped in the wetsuit chlorine pool (again) at about 7.

Event warmup:

Nearly no warm up. Just before the wave, a few of us dove in and swam a few strokes out.
Swim
  • 06m 13s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

The course was probably on the short side, but I killed the swim. The wave lined up in the water very wide and only about two deep. I lined up far left hoping to catch a fast guy, but he was immediately gone.

I had a good divng start with a few dolphin kicks like off a wall, and swam hard toward the first buoy. There was some aggressive contact until after the first buoy, but I was fast enough to get away. I made a bee line to the buoy, and expected to wrestle through the turn, but had zero contact at the turns.

About 1/3 of the way through, I realized I had too much adrenaline, and forced myself to exhale hard for a few strokes.

It looks like I was about 25% back overall, not terrible for this field.

This was my first race in a T1, and I liked it. I would gave gone sleeveless if the water were 67 or 68.

Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Killed T1, sort of, 1st in the AG.

The DeSoto stripped really easily, the top on the run, and the bibs at the rack. The shoes were in the pedals, and like recent races, my run makes T1 fast...
What would you do differently?:

...but, I had a few screw ups. At swim out, I dropped my goggles a couple of times and lost a few seconds getting them.

And the clipped in shoes were a disaster. The hill at the mount line made things worst, but both shoes ended up bouncing away after hitting the ground. The rubber band technique might have fixed this, but maybe not up hill.
Bike
  • 43m 18s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.40 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my weak spot since I've barely been cycling, and it was my the first time on the TT bike in months. The ride was comfortable enough, but couldn't easily stay the whole way in aero.

I was 3 mph and 6 minutes slower than my pr here in 2011, so this is obviously were I can use work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Not bad, 5th in the AG. I lost a couple of seconds running to the wrong rack.
Run
  • 24m 8s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I was slower than normal for this race, but didn't feel bad.
What would you do differently?:

I need a lot more run volume and to lose 5 or 10 pounds.

Event comments:

A fun race, well executed by the new race directors.
