Subject: Kid's Bike Suggestions

Hello,

I have a 7 year old who is riding his bike more and more.  Though he's not out putting on miles, he recently expressed interest in a bike that "has three gears s I can go up hills easier".  At the moment he's riding a BMX-style bike that really isn't a good fit for him.  I wouldn't want to get a road bike, and I would ideally get him something that will fit him for a few years.  Also hoping not to have to spend hundreds of dollars.  Are there mountain bikes that size that aren't Wal-Mart pieces of junk?  Maybe this is a pipe dream.  Any suggestions though?  For what it's worth, he's about 50" tall.

Thanks.

I too have a 7 year old who is growing fast.

I found one of these in great shape on our local craigslist for just $75:

This summer, I will be adding drop bars and STI type shifters. Rather than plunking down a lot of money for a low quality bike from a department type store, just watch craigslist for the various 24" wheeled used bikes out there, if you have a little patience, I think you will find something for a very good price that will meet your needs and will adapt to your growing son.

hope that helps,

Wish you were closer, I have the perfect bike for you! My kid recently outgrew his Schwinn Midi Mesa 24" 3-speed mountain bike. It's a "Schwinn Select", which means LBS quality, not available at Walmart/Target/etc. Original MSRP was $410, I think I paid ~$280 for it new as an REI closeout.

I've recently spiffed it up, and was waiting for the weather to break to post it on the local craigslist for $125. If you have any interest, I can look into shipping costs. I recently had a bike shipped to me, so I have a box in my garage. I think the little Schwinn might fit in with only the handle bars and pedals removed.

[EDIT] Ad copy attached, although that's a stock photo. Would take actual photos if interested.

Thanks for the thoughts.  I'll probably keep my eye out for something that may fit the bill on local Craigslist.  I've got a little time before it gets to be decent biking weather here in Minnesota.
