Subject: Why NOT run an 11-32 cassette @ IMLOU?
I (of course) can run any cassette I want, but I'm wondering why I SHOULDN'T run an 11-32. When I say I can, I do have the long cage RD on my P2.

I ran the 11-32 on my roadie last weekend (did a 65.5 mi. ride with a little over 5900' of ascent). What would be the negative(s) to running this on my TT bike? I know the front chainrings are different, but my thinking is the 32 would give me some respite, if it came to that....and I wouldn't be missing out on any of the bigger gears.

I could absolutely be missing something. If so....what is it?

Thanks.

I rode my stock Felt B14 at IM Louisville last year which has 50/34 front and 11-28 rear and that's all I needed. There's nothing that steep there and I don't remember ever needing that 28 on the rear. 4,500 feet of climbing over 112 miles isn't that bad.

Put a good amount of climbs on your training rides as you did for that 65 miler, you'll be good come race day.

I don't see much negative on using the 11-32 except that you'll be loosing some of those "tweener" gear ratios that might be a sweet spot for you.

Everyone is different of course so what cassette may work for others may not work for you, but my biggest issue would be the one Reece raises re the missing gears.  Look at what gear seems to be your sweet spot, and whether the 11-32 has it.  There will be a few bigger gaps in there.

I'm usually a proponent of better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, but there are limits.

If having the 32, will help you keep your power in line and not spike  power, it is a good thing. More you spike power climbing hills in an IM, the more negative  effect you will have on the run.

How much power you need to get up any hill varies by your weight. Then that is that number compared to your FTP.

Most folks riding in tris ride to hard up hills and to easy down.

IMC I had a 34 that I used a lot climbing those long hills.

Think the same on that last line. With 11 speed being more prevalent nowadays up to a 28t in the back should be fine as far as any gaps go. In the 30's though, see about the gaps, if they're an issue. Someone who can more comfortably pedal over a wider cadence range can get through wider spaced cassettes more easily.

Keep in mind that power does not have to spike when cadence drops on the hills, people choose to do that as a response to slowing down. Though having a gear available to spin more at what they've trained at can help alleviate that desire to push harder.

How much power to carry a given speed up any hill varies by weight. There isn't really so much of a minimum power, not one that people really need to be concerned with. Sometimes just need to deal with it and slow down some more to keep the effort in line. It's a mental trap that many fall into. The extra effort is likely to hurt more than pedaling slower than normal.

Tuesday was the first ride of the year on the tri bike (actually, first since my Dec. shoulder surgery). I've been on the trainer with the tri bike....but not the road. After riding the road bike, the tri bike feels like I'm riding a Trojan horse. I love my tri bike, but the difference between it and the roadie (going uphill, especially) make me question the 11-32 option.

I think I'll get one put on.....just to see. I used HR (not to exceed) on the big climbs, last weekend. I have power on the tri bike (and HR, of course). I can tell you there's NO WAY I'd want to make the climbs I did last Sat. on my tri bike (with the current 11-28)....and probably not even with the 11-32. FTR....I weigh 195#'s right now....and hope to run LOU at 188-ish.

If climbing is an issue (and I vary between 185 and 200, and at 190+ it's always an issue for me), you can consider switching to a 50/34 crank  I thought maybe you had one but that was Reece's post.   I have 50/34 on both road and tri, and it makes a substantial difference (acknowledging that's also a $$ difference than just swapping cassettes)

Given what you have said, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't rock the 32 cassette.

I raced Lou last year and debated between and 32 and 28... in the end I went with a 28 and wish I had gone with the 32, mainly b/c I'm a big guy and not an overly strong cyclist. The hills aren't terrible, but the added weight around my mid-section made it hard to spin up and manage my power, even in the granny gear.

You've got lots of time. Put it on and ride for a few months. See if the cog spacing bothers you. I have a 32 on my road bike and don't notice the spacing at all, even on mostly flat rides. Don't fall into the trap of thinking there's only one correct cadence to pedal at.
