Does anyone here suffer from chronic migraines and find triathlons manageable? I am female and just turned 22. I've suffered from chronic migraines for the past five or so years now. For over a year and a half now though I have had some sort of headache or migraine everyday.

Right now I just started to train for a sprint triathlon. Running is definitely my weakest area. For the past few years I stuck primarily to swimming as my main source of exercise because it does not trigger a migraine as often as running does. I have taken a number of spin classes and found that my headaches seem to do okay when biking but I know spin class is not all that comparable to the bike portion of a triathlon. High exertion and dehydration are definitely migraine triggers for me. Luckily I do not often get vertigo or dizziness with my migraine so I can push through the pain to finish a workout. I also talked to multiple doctors and neurologists about exercising with a migraine and they all concluded that it is safe for me to continue to work out as long as I don't feel dizzy or vertigo and I am still able to tolerate the pain.

Working out five times a week does seem to have decreased the intensity of my migraines but I can't help but worry about whether or not I will even be able to finish a triathlon.

Anyways just wanted to see if anyone here also suffers from migraines and has any suggestions.

Yes, I've been suffering from migraines for a better part of 25 years and been racing duathlons (and a few tri's) over the last 15 years. It actually helps me manage the migraines, probably as a stress reliever (which is one of the triggers for me).

Yep, chronic migraine sufferer as well and I race triathlons no problem! In fact some of my best races have been when I wake up with a migraine.

You can do it. Hang in there!
