What was it like, the first time you attempted the 2.4 mi. swim?

Asking for a friend..... (who's only done the 1.2 mi. distance a handful of times)

Not too bad. But it's not like I just jumped in the water one day and decided to knock out 2.4 miles. Built up in the pool and with open water swimming. I have access to a lake that's exactly 1K there-and-back. That makes it really easy to build up to 4K with open water swimming. Not to mention a big confidence builder.

I finished a full iron a couple weeks ago and felt very confident in being able to swim the 2.4 in a respectable time. Turns out the wind had blown the buoys out the night before and we ended up racing 3.1 miles. So part of me is pissed that I had to swim the additional .7 miles. Another part of me is happy to know the conditioning I had done in the pool / lake was well worth the effort.

Swimming is without a doubt my worst discipline. But I was surprised how quickly I was able to go from 1K to 4K. Stick to a schedule and either hire a coach or use a plan off this website or elsewhere. I used Don Fink's Be Iron Fit and just loved it!

I'm not a great swimmer but for me it wasn't too hard to make the jump physically. Mentally it was hard. I would get bored, lose focus, and my stroke would start to suffer because I wanted to hurry up and get done (i.e. I would rush my stroke).

With cycling and running there are things to look at to take your mind off what you're doing. With swimming, even in the open water, you don't have much to look at and it's not like you can really chat with people around you.

The long swim sets in training were worse than the day of the swim. I hated being in the pool for those 4,000 meter days. The day of the swim is not that bad because you are pumped for the race. I stayed in my zone and focused on a smooth stroke and breathing.

It was actually over quicker than I thought it would be and felt good getting out of the water on both of the IM races I completed.

As a former swimmer, the actual distance wasn't an issue for me, but depending on the course, sighting for twice as long was my biggest challenge. I usually swim an extra 100m+ during a 70.3, but could be 300m+ during a full IM. You also have to take in the consideration if you are swimming in a lake, a river, or the ocean. They all behave differently, so it is not just about doubling the distance, IMO.

Friends doing this transition describes it as 3x the distance. If you treat it as such, you'll be fine.

Sighting, pacing energy management were the challenge ... yeah 4km in ow was never the issue for me either
