Subject: Using a "not to exceed - watts" for hills
I'm getting better at pacing my rides, setting NP goals and being pretty close to them when I'm done. In doing this, I'm also using RPE and HR data...especially on ascents. I've been playing around with setting a "not to exceed - Watts" # (while climbing), but it's been on speculation (speculation....using RPE and HR).

Has anyone seen an article(s?) that speaks to this? I'm betting there's a more scientific way to arrive at the number.

Thanks.

I'm assuming your asking this as it applies to long course triathlons. This is a tricky setting because you have to take into account the entire bike courses type of hills and what the run course is like. I generally try to stay as even as possible but if I'm climbing I'd stay in super low Zone 4 or upper Zone 3 max so my legs aren't trashed for a decent run.

Here. This will help.

https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/what-is-a-match/

In my races, I download to GC (Golden Cheatah) and it tells me how many 'matches' I burned in races due to poor pacing. Depending on the distance, I know my goal watts and what I can do on hills to pace properly. For me, if I'm racing a HIM, and my goal is to hold ~200 watts for the distance, then I'll allow myself to go up to 10% over that on hills, depending on the course. Sometimes I'll just do it at the beginning and end of a hill and get back to 'goal watts' so I don't flame out later on the run.
