Subject: Travelling - Bike Box, are you allowed...
I am travelling with my bike for the first time on 27th of this month and wanted to know what can/cannot be put in with the bike.

CO2 cartridges? Tools? Bike Shoes? etc

Anyone been stopped with certain things before?

We've flown alot of bikes (over 50 flights at least) and never had problems with any of the things you mentioned.  Tools, shoes, helmet, whatever will fit and not put it over 50 lbs. (keep it under 50 and sometimes you won't pay the bike fee)  I didn't mention CO2 because you are not supposed to have them......but we have forgotten a few times and they were still there when we opened the box.  Keep in mind, the more "stuff" you put in there, the more TSA will rifle through the box, possibly messing up your good packing.  Sometimes you can stand there while they do i8t and re-pack, but overwhelmingly you will not be there and they will just throw everything back in.  Go to the hardware store and get TSA approved locks...TSA has a master key for those and "apparently" they appreciate the ease of using them.

Thanks.

Like the idea of the approved locks. Will do that as well.

I am only taking hand luggage with me so would be good to pack in some items to save space definitely.

Agree with everything Left Brain said. I have forgotten about CO2 cartridges before and had no issues, but try to remember to take it out. I've traveled with my bike many times, and sometimes it arrives in great condition, other times not. I packed my helmet one time, padded with towels, and it arrived cracked. But the entire bike was also not secure upon arrival that time. It was pretty messed up. I have put my wetsuit in with no issues. Bike bottles, nutrition, etc.And the fees they charge, I still have not figured out why sometimes they let it slide and other times charge. I plan on paying and hope for the best!

I'd say this is a certainty. I've never received my bike the same way I packed it.

The rest, no problem. (Although one time Singapore customs did ask me if my pedal wrench was a weapon....upon entering the country!) But never CO2. Our bike shop owner suggests not packing aero helmets since their shape makes them kind of fragile. Traveling somewhere where the customs officials speak little to no English makes it more interesting--try not to pack anything that looks suspicious, since you can't easily explain what it is. Or have Google Translate ready and hope they can at least read their own language and that the translation is correct. I have had real fun trying to explain what a bike trainer and a power meter are in Vietnamese.

Brilliant - thank you everyone.

I have paid in advance for the bike, as I am from the UK and that's the way I can guarantee that there will be space for it. I would be a broken man if I arrived and they said that they couldn't fit it in and someone else beat me in the que to filling the space ha
I will make sure it is packed really well to try and avoid some of the horror stories.

I am travelling from UK to France so it isn't a longhaul and hope for the best.

I'm about 50/50 with CO2 clearing TSA. I usually pick one or two up at the destination expo
