I think I remember being uncomfortable in bulky bike shorts and might have bought thinly padded ones. Or are they tri shorts? Can't remember what I bought years ago (they are holding up nicely). How can I tell? I ask because if the are bike shirts guessing they will hold more water.

Good question.  The pad should be fairly minimal.  My bike shorts have a more substantial pad.  Most of my tri shorts have storage areas for gels too.

But there are thinly padded bike shorts too. If I soak them is there a way from how it absorbs water if they are tri shorts or not?

I have no idea.  If the product number is still visible, I would just google it and see what pops up.  Have you tried a swim/run with them on?  If they work for a swim/run test without issue you can call them tri shorts.

Are you able to post a pic? Perhaps someone will have the same ones and can provide info...??

I think there is no difference between a thinly padded bike short and a triathlon short.

Thought maybe there was an issue with absorbency. Guess I can soak them all in the tub and see if I can spot a difference. Don't want a diaper feeling.

The "padding" on my trishorts is more like an extra layer of soft fabric, whereas my bike shorts have always had some kind of filling between the fabric.  Either way, you might prefer taking a test ride/run - more than just stopping at wetting them.
