Subject: Benefit of hills when the race is flat
My next race is flat but I'm vacationing in mountain country. Should I try to avoid the hills as much as possible or will they be helpful, even though the race is flat?

Race specific training is more important for hilly or rolling courses, not for flat courses. That said, there is utility in practicing hitting your goal pace/effort/watts on the flats so you know and can execute.

Hills build strength so they will be helpful for training. And how can you not take advantage of cycling in the mountains? Just make sure you have enough recovery as hill work is harder on muscles that you may not be used to using.

Hills are good for strengthening the legs and will only help you in your next race. The race distance of your next race is an important factor. If it is a Sprint or Oly than I would train on the hills without worry.

HIM or IM race then I would search some flat routes for my run training.

As far as the bike goes, enjoy the hills and have fun.
